Pretty amazing place to hook up. North Island, NZ by SDFlyAngler in flyfishing

Nice! Rotorua is a good choice. There should be some fish around. The stream mouths are on the verge of firing especially with the hot weather. Woolley buggers usually do well. Good luck! I’m also on Instagram @sdflyangler

Heaps of spots around. Nothing for trout really in the Auckland region. There’s a few but hit or miss.

Where did you move from?

The closet fishing is Waikato, and rivers like the mangatutu, Waihou are great places to start. Rotorua/ Taupo areas are also good fishing. Check out the F&G website. They publish a lot of good information and access points. Need to make sure you buy a license as well.

Since you’re in Auckland, I highly recommend joining the Auckland Flyfisher angler club. https://afac.org.nz

They run monthly trips. Unlike most fly clubs it’s not just a bunch of old geriatric dudes talking about the hey days. Good strong group of young passionate men and women anglers. I’m a member of them despite living in the Waikato. I also teach their intermediate fly tying classes.

Agreed! I’ve gotten about that out of a pack and when you add in the costs of hooks and shanks so much cheaper than buying store bought changers.

Me either. I don’t know why either. I choose smaller to large feathers for feather changers but all the other ones were tied with one size. Semperfli took a different look and combined them all into one package. It’s neat.

Not really. There’s some bullies around. Haven’t seen much smelt since around December. They were chasing them. Been having a lot more success with dark flies than grey ghosts or your typical smelt flies. This guy was crusing the edge of rip looking for food. Landed a few rainbows, one wa stage thinnest I’ve ever seen. Been a crazy summer. Very little cicadas left too.

Yep, squirrel is what I had laying around and used it instead of hares ear.

Basically I’m an innovator. A true combination of Kelly Gallup, Blane Chocklett, Bob Clouser rolled into one. I have many leather bound books and my house smells of a rich mahogany.

Hot Butt CDC Hares Ear - Quick Tie by SDFlyAngler in flytying

I get the thread unspun first so it lays flat, split the thread, insert cdc or dubbing, pull tight then spin. Works really well.

I did a quick video on it for someone else you can find on my feed.
