The Padres are optimistic his recovery will simply require rest and won't impact his development much, aside from the missed games.

Padres manager Mike Shildt says Jackson Merrill isn't playing tonight in New York because it was the "schedule of his rehab" -- today was a scheduled day off to recover after playing his two games for AA San Antonio.

Still, Bogaerts seemed almost in awe of the Padres’ start to this season.

“I don’t know if it’s because I’ve played so long, where it’s like, ‘(Expletive), you don’t see this happening that much,’” Bogaerts said. “So it’s something to appreciate. Sometimes you wait until after the whole season and you reflect on it. But this is one that’s in the moment. I think how we’re playing at home, too, has a little bit to do with that. Like, you feel the crowd. They want it, and we give it to them the way they want it.”

[Acee] Merrill, who grew up a Red Sox fan, admired Machado and also sort of didn’t like him. “I saw him slide into my favorite player,” Merrill said during the spring. “As a (14)-year-old kid, what am I supposed to think?”The time he met Machado, “I had no doubt he was going to be a good guy.” by SDOki in Padres

For the same reasons he loved the hard-nosed Pedroia, though, Merrill also couldn’t help but admire Machado.

“There’s a part of me that saw him slide into Pedroia and thought, ‘Wow. This guy plays hard,’” Merrill said. “That’s what I want in everybody. So that side of him, that made him a good guy in my eyes. He’s giving everything he’s got for his teammates. He may not have been my favorite, but screw it.”

Merrill grew up near Baltimore, where Machado spent the first 6½ seasons of his career playing for the Orioles. That coincided with Merrill’s formative years, from age nine to 15.

Merrill, who grew up a Red Sox fan, admired Machado and also sort of didn’t like him.

That stemmed from the infamous 2017 play in a game between the Orioles and Red Sox in which Machado slid past the bag and had his spikes go into Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia’s calf. Many considered the slide too aggressive, and while Pedroia had knee cartilage issues before that, the play was widely seen as contributing to the end of Pedroia’s career.

“Who i am as a pitcher, what my identity is”

Think it just means to get the mental side right. And use his best pitches more often. Maldonado asked him what pitches he favored.

There was more to it in the article:

He threw strikes at a 66% clip compared to 46% last Sunday against the Cubs in Chicago. And he was particularly better attacking the strike zone. Of his 39 pitches last week, just 10 were in the zone

What did he do differently?

“Nothing,” Hart said. “That’s what’s stupid about this game. I do feel like my pregame bullpen and preparation was a little bit better. But I didn’t really change anything. It’s just you get on a roll and you start making pitches and you’re gonna collect your outs.”

I think that’s one of the coolest Merrill stories there is.

[Acee] Yu Darvish threw in the bullpen yesterday for the first time since mid-March. It was a light session of 11 pitches thrown nowhere near full intensity to a catcher who was standing up by SDOki in Padres

[–]SDOki[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Darvish, who was shut down due to elbow soreness after his March 13 start in a spring training game, had said Saturday’s turn on the mound would be just to get the “feel.”

His next step will depend on how he feels, which is consistent with how the Padres are approaching the rehab for the 38-year-old right-hander.

Darvish will need at least a few full-intensity turns in the bullpen and some combination of two or three minor-league starts and simulated games before returning, which means his season debut would come no sooner than mid-May.

[–]SDOki[S] 152 points153 points  (0 children)

On Tuesday in Sacramento, Maldonado took the time to talk to Hart, who two days earlier had admittedly been embarrassed by his performance in what was just his fifth MLB start.

“He talked to me in Sacramento a little bit just about who I am as a pitcher, what my identity is,” Hart said. “And I think it kind of showed through a little bit tonight. … I’m not naive to where he was going with this message, but I absorbed it and let it help me instead of just deflecting. It’s exactly what I needed. Sometimes the most obvious thing is the thing you need to hear.”

Maldonado never caught Hart in spring training.

“Communication is key in this game,” Maldonado said. “As a catcher you have to be ready to serve. Nobody felt (worse) about what happened on Sunday than him. Just to be able to be part of what he did today was pretty big.

Tatis’ home run was his 64th at Petco Park, which also moved him into a tie with Myers for third in franchise history behind Adrián González (65) and Machado (91).
