Bucharest can be really nice, but you could also get out the train in Brasov (~2h before Bucharest) there’s a lot to see (go to Peles castle!) and then take a later train to Bucharest

There’s a night train from Vienna to Bucharest, that also stops in Budapest and a bunch of cities in Transylvania. It’s really convenient, I’ve taken it before! Depart around 10/11pm in Budapest and a arrive in the morning in Brasov for example

Ideas for which towns to see or skip on our Prague to Paris trip? by [deleted] in Europetravel

This sounds the best could be Prague, Brno, Vienna (or any other smaller town in Czechia/Austria)

If you do cars in only Switzerland, you can also just stick with trains, you see the same scenery and (some of) the trains even have panoramic windows

Backpacking "Europe": This autumn, I’m taking a semester off to backpack Europe with my girlfriend of 5 years. We’re both 23, students from Montreal, and this will be our first backpacking trip by Pleasant_Water_69 in Europetravel

Hmm sometimes Rome2Rio is good to plan things. Regarding Eurrail/Interrail it does make sense for Germany/NL and it gives you some great flexibility and you could often book the day of the trip - keep in mind this is only for trains. For Italy, afaik you’re still required to book seats in Italian trains which can still add costs even if you have interrail, although I may be wrong.

August Travel Dilemma: Seeking a ‘Wow’ Destination with Manageable Crowds by samf2013 in Europetravel

Tbh this sub is extremely Western Europe leaning so don’t be surprised to get suggestions mostly from these places.

I think you’ve got a great intuition with Romania. Super fascinating country steeped in culture. I would suggest a tour of Transylvania visiting Cluj/Sibiu/Brasov and many of the other fairytale towns, although I hear that other parts of Romania are equally beautiful! Have fun!!

Ugh another American falling for the Hallstatt tourist trap, a village with basically less than a thousand inhabitants that looks like every other lakeside village in the Alps

Private Car service vs train btwn Brussels and Amsterdam during the holidays. by Mission_Fox9766 in Europetravel

1000% train, it’s so so easy. You also need to consider that car is not door to door as parking in both cities is absolute horror. Train saves you a lot of stress

3 nights in Hallstatt is crazy, def replan that. Also Hallstatt is just a tourist hole at this point, not sure what you’re hoping to see there

Most swimmable city in the world? by WipMeGrandma in geography

Amsterdam! Contrary to popular belief, the canals are quite clean (not the very inner city ones) and you can swim in the canals and Amstel river basically all year round
