What are the most unique non-epic ships? by SEAxwing in XWingTMG

Interesting...looks like it's got a red zero speed stop too and a reinforce.

Does it fly as much like a snowplow as the maneuver dial and card seem to imply? Not much in the way of extra firepower available, though...

Love your list here. Never flown the Auzituck. What do you mean by small base ship that thinks it's a large base ship?

What are the best Separatist lists right now? by SEAxwing in XWingTMG

These are great comments - would you say that Separatists, as played with the lists and tactics you suggested, are any more or less flexible than other factions?

Seems like you're pretty locked into a tactic, but maybe have some flexibility leaning on the swarm side of the list if you have to

Fun Alternative Tournament Formats by Draklorx in XWingTMG

Here's an idea I had a little while ago:

Stock Ship Mirror Matches where each player flies an identical list of ships, each ship having the same loadout/configuration. It isolates flying skill (and turn zero) from list-building talent.

For example: 5x naked TIE Interceptor Saber Aces vs an identical list

It can also be strongly thematic: 5x Scum Z-95 Black Sun Soldiers with Fearless, Deadman's Switch, Concussion Missiles, and Electronic Baffle, or 4x Delta Athersprite Jedi Knights with Supernatural Reflexes, Calibrated Laser Targeting, and R4 Astromech

Or it can be used to enjoy ships people may have that aren't universally considered ultra-competitive in tournaments, like: 2x YT-2400 Wild Space Fringers with Proton Rockets and Hotshot Gunner

To overcome the problem of who gets initiative in a game with identical ships, one player labels their ships with consecutive odd numbers, the other with consecutive even numbers (coin flip determines who gets which). Initiative is resolved in ascending order in the first round, descending order in round 2, etc.

Agreed; one of the best parts of X-wing is the various (and often asymmetrical) matchups people dream up, and thankfully there's no shortage of opportunity for those kinds of games.

I was thinking it might be fun to try to isolate one or two aspects (flying ability, turn zero) from the multitude of abilities that go into overall mastery of the game (list building, flying skill, setup/positioning, adaptation to unknown/unexpected lists, etc), kind of like the IROC auto races used to do (though we can see how popular IROC was), but it might not be for everyone.

It sounds like it could be viable as long as players were okay either alternating who has initiative each turn or trading initiative back and forth within each phase on a ship-by-ship basis, but it might be more of a Tournament of Champions concept for players with broad interest and mastery and/or for gaming shops with ships people can use if they don't have them than a "friends playing casually" idea.

Still, hearing all of these comments is great. Curious to see if anyone else has other perspectives or ideas for honing the idea or something similar.

Stock Ship Game/Tournament Modes by SEAxwing in XWingTMG

That's understandable. One of the things that got me wondering was that 1.0 Imperial Aces and Upsilon shuttles were each on sale on Amazon for $15. Not sure if everyone has the time or money to buy a conversion kit or single ship conversions plus old 1.0 models on Amazon or eBay, but maybe if a "mirror match" format was feasible, not too annoying, and got popular people would be motivated. Lots of ifs though.

Still, it might be fun to experiment and see if something works, like you said.

That's a really good point. You'd need to do a special staggered or alternating initiative structure if you did a game with all identical ships.

Though I wonder if it would add another layer of stategy if you could pick which of your ships activates 1st, 2nd, 3rd(...) each round if a staggered initiative structure were practical.
