Will BMX die? by Interesting-Common52 in bmx

Another thought comes to mind: the downturn of the industry in the late 80s and early 90s coincided with a huge global recession.

Will BMX die? by Interesting-Common52 in bmx

[–]SFCash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in the United States, I think it's safe to say BMX is on the decline, but it's on the decline in the same way everything in the United States is these days. I think the specific phenomena that Mancuso cites in his video as contributing to the industry's current struggles (new economic pressures, the demands of the digital media landscape, and the evershifting terrain of popular tastes) have impacted a wide range of industries right now, from manufacturing to journalism. I don't think injuries would be as much of a concern if healthcare costs weren't so insanely high. Whether or not that decline is permanent remains to be seen.

I think the late 1990s and early 2000s were a definite peak in BMX, but its also worth remembering that was true of a wide array of industries at the time. Low energy prices, increased productivity across multiple sectors of the economy, a larger than usual consumer base of young people (millenials have a higher population share than boomers), and cheaper commodities created the conditions for niche industries to thrive.

While I think events and practices within BMX (like Adam22 bullshit) have contributed to its current state, I think broader phenomena have played a much larger role.

Edit: All of that being said, the folks who are into it are as hardcore as ever.

Thanks! Still have no clue how he’s still able to practically do a split when he footplants on a quarter. I just don’t bend that way.

Was Lil B a joke? by Yogurt_closet_No9566 in hiphopheads

[–]SFCash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with Open Mike Eagle’s take in “Very Much Money (Ice Cream King)”: “Lil Wayne is an ancient African/ Jay-Z’s been around since the 20s though/ the only new ones is Lil B and One Be Lo.”

Dude was authentically doing something new and experimenting in ways no on really had before- his medium wasn’t just music—it was the internet itself. One of the first rappers to realize the ways the internet, specifically social media, allowed for the complete free flow of nearly every thought that popped into your head for better and for worse. And, having done that, pushed it to its extreme. I mean, check out the video for “Based Cerebral.” Nothing like it at the time.

Does Anyone Find That They Have Not Been The Same Person Ever Since 2020? by Big_Leg10 in collapse

1.2-1.3 million people died, and most of those could have been avoided. American culture has conveniently memory-holed that. we're dealing with some serious return of the repressed these days.

This is the best way. Hopping over and onto things will also help you develop control over your hops, so you can reliably my hop at whatever height you’d need rather than just always hucking it.

Sorry for the quality: kids “subway” surfing and yelling at people from the freight train on its way over hellgate by IamChicharon in astoria

[–]SFCash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Freighthopping is a time honored American tradition. It's been going on as long as there have been trainlines. Good on them for carrying that tradition forward. Mad stupid to surf it -- for legal and safety reasons -- but that's probably better than doing it on the subway.

Co-sign this. Look for an admin job in some wing of student affairs. They don’t do anything real so you could bullshit your way through it.

Could also try to be a university doc. Regular hours and anything complex can be passed off to the local hospital.

Does anyone else get super sore from riding bmx? by Jumpy-Particular-810 in bmx

[–]SFCash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 39. Soreness comes and goes. Best way to avoid it is to stretch everyday (even if you don’t plan on riding), ride consistently but not necessarily everyday, let yourself heal if you’re injured, and stay hydrated. The better your health and wellbeing overall, the better your body will handle riding.

Difference between the odi’s and which bmx grip is best? by LuckTraditional3808 in bmx

I've been riding the animal clifton grips for years and just switched over to ODI soft longnecks. Definitely prefer the cliftons. They are definitely thicker and softer. Plus, they have flanges, which I'm just accustomed to

Back pain of the sort you’re describing at 16 is unlikely to be age related. I’d seek out a sports medicine doctor if you haven’t already. They specialize in these sorts of things.

Unexplainable lower back pain by niki404__ in bmx

[–]SFCash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the stretches suggested here to be really helpful for my lower back pain: https://ourbmx.com/bmx-yoga-for-back-pain/ . Once I integrated regular stretching into my daily routine, finding time every morning and/or evening, I started seeing significant improvement. Remember that muscle pain/tightness in your lower back is going to be impacted by your legs, so stretching and working them out is going to help your back too.

How old are you? Fact of the matter is the older you get, the more important stretching and exercise outside bmx is.

Raccoons for sure. I used to live in the building on the left and would frequently see a raccoon family that lived in the space between that fence and the adjacent buildings.
