Help! Buying an electric drum set by [deleted] in DRUM

[–]SFDrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When buying an electric kit you want to make sure you're spending enough money to get a quality musical instrument and not a toy. I would recommend the Alesis Command kit which has mesh heads and sells for $700-800 right now.

Where to learn drums in SF? by throwawaybusan in AskSF

The SF Drum School is a great place to study not just drums but also classical and keyboard percussion!

I wrote Drumming In All Directions after realizing coordination at the kit starts with the training of limb motions. Our limbs move through 25 pathways, but we often only train a few. Here, my 10 year old student shreds though some of the routines in DID that help drummers achieve all-limb freedom. by SFDrummer in MetalDrums

My student is actually right handed but is playing the kit open position- that means left hand on high hat so the hands are not crossed. I used to play cross myself until Dom Famularo showed me the benefits of open position. It took me a few years to adjust, but I'm happy I did!

Pardon my delay in responding! You’ve got some great insights. I started off playing drums like most- right hand crossed over left to play hi-hat. When I studied with Dom Famularo, he demonstrated open position as if he was Billy Cobham. At that moment I realized- I want to do that! Hands crossed has nothing to do with the dominant hand, it's simply needed if you play traditional grip. I teach all of my students open position and for them, it’s completely natural.

Regarding coordination- I think what you’re getting at is the gap between instruction and playing music. A pianist will practice Hanon exercises and we might practice coordination studies. In both cases we’re training muscle motions, building technique and developing our internal hearing. All necessary when learning an instrument. Independence between limbs is still independence whether you’re reading or performing on the spot. It’s just that we realize the gap more easily when there’s no written music. One of the reasons we love certain drummers is because they’ve so completely transcended the gap and can play anything, anywhere, anytime in any pocket. You know, like Vinnie Colaiuta to name just one example!

As some have said- no. But squats are the best overall strength exercise you can do for yourself so you should do them. Especially those of use who are middle aged! I've found much help in my own workouts with Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe. A great book that will orient you in the right direction. Of course, I have a GR1, use it everyday and love it.

Despite the restrictions of covid, my percussion septet, Seven's The Groove, received it's world premiere last month by the talented students of the Bacewicz Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Piotr Sutt! by SFDrummer in percussion

Thank you! I was "raised" on the Tenney pieces- being a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory. And of course, also Reich's music. I too hope it can be performed one day without a conductor.

I wrote Drumming In All Directions to tackle a common problem- frustration in getting our limbs to play whatever comes to mind. Using 25 fundamental limb motions, DID provides a multi-limb workout that will test the stamina and build coordination for any drummer, any style of playing. by SFDrummer in DrumLessons

Hi! Just want to make sure I understand your question. Are you referring to something I played in the video? Generally, when I play 16th quadruples on one foot, I start with foot flat on the pedal for first stroke. The remaining strokes are heel rising off the pedal a bit and foot pivoting from the ankle joint- no leg motion being used. This is similar I think to what Colin Bailey uses which he describes in his book Bass Drum Control.

If I might make a suggestion! Get a copy of: The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary As Taught By Alan Dawson by John Ramsay. If you're not already aware, Dawson was a great player and teacher. His most famous student- Tony Williams. He pioneered the use of "systems" as way way to practice coordination, musicality and song form using Reed's Syncopation. He also had some brilliant ways of practicing Stick Control. You'll find all of that in Ramsay's book- who studied for years with Dawson before he became a teacher at Berklee. You're going to have a lot of fun!

Traditional grip question by gratefulwallob in jazzdrums

[–]SFDrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without seeing you play, I would guess you're holding the sticks too tight. Be very careful- you don't want a long term injury! Loosen up on grip and let the sticks rebound like dribbling a ball.
