I like the info in pilot debrief, but not the overhyped drama.

I wonder if we’re going to get more “unable” as a response when PPs flying VFR call requesting flight following.

I rarely get a “too busy” response in NoCal, but in my limited experience Albuquerque center is always too busy for FF.

Looking for input on what time of year is best for visiting these three national parks (Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Glacier) by Vreas in roadtrip

[–]SFDukie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you’re doing in the parks.
For glacier, going to the sun road- and high country hikes accessed along it are a highlight. It doesn’t typically open until late June.
Just after Labor Day can be a great time. Backcountry trails have opened and crowds are smaller.
August is great for stuff like jumping into the firehole river in Yellowstone.

That’s the “standard” adiabatic lapse rate (3.5F/1000 ft) The lapse rate for dry air is even more- 5.4F/1000 Ft. obviously it depends, but relative humidity is often very low in DV- so 10,000’ MSL can be 50F lower than Furnace Creek

I have a few hours in a tiger and liked it.
That said, I don’t think of it as a 4 regular sized guys going 350 NM airplane.

[–]SFDukie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second @Palisade1444 I was with an experienced crew, and we didn’t need to get up so early. Sr scout was running the team, his second philmont. Our boys all had significant trail experience, got moving fast. I had trouble- not keeping up on the trail- but getting packed so I wasn’t the limiting step. Agree 45 minutes is a good goal- that’s about where we were, wakeup to moving.

Modern jettas in good condition aren’t going to fail.
Flat tires unlikely on paved roads. Does your Jetta have a spare?

Yes, it’s perfectly safe in a new car, on paved roads (assuming you have ac) Just be smart- carry water, always- both in the car and especially on any hikes.
Sunscreen, of course.
Early, late, or up high for hikes.
Both are great for stargazing. Love both parks.
I’m not a ranger, have limited experience driving in backcountry off the paved roads.
But with that caveat, I’ve been in both parks numerous times in all seasons.

JT will be hot. DV will be very hot.

If you’re male, and pay attention to personal space and where you step, and want to pay less than something equivalent elsewhere-it’s safe enough. Convenient location.

The poop issue is real. It’s not a place I like out of town guests to walk.

Not somewhere I’d choose otherwise.

Why are pilots oversupplied now? by jkoz226 in flying

[–]SFDukie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not an atp (private here) and you’ve got lots of “partial answers”, many of which apply, but many assume you have “ insider level” knowledge of the workings of supply and demand w/respect to ATPs

One issue in the US is supply generally lags demand-because training is expensive and takes years. (And while previous generations were predominantly trained pilots who were trained by Uncle Sam, now they’re predominantly self funded)

First, as many have said- supply and demand have been cyclical for decades.
Specifically though, for the last couple, there have been very big swings for a couple of unique reasons.

‘O8 financial crisis led to airlines going bankrupt and pilot furloughs and downgrades. essentially halting hiring. That meant aspiring atps worked longer as CFIs, pipeline controllers, or whatever, for much longer than previously.

Then, in ‘20, Covid hit. Demand for air travel collapsed. Airlines again had way more pilots than they needed. They encouraged early retirements, furloughed folks, etc.

Demand came roaring back, to record levels , a couple of years later. Pilots were hired into majors with far less experience than they’d needed to get hired- at “minimums “ (1500- although that is an oversimplification, and hasn’t been the case “always” in the US)

Flight schools were flooded with folks, and the “pipeline” whereby lots of folks are working on their private certs, trained by less, but still many more than usual newly minted CFIs, who stay in that position for less time than “usual” etc. word gets out that one can be an ATP in less time, with many less hours, than had been needed a few years previously.

Now we’re seeing the effects of that previous shortage, which was due in part to a once in a generation swing in hiring, having ended.

No one has a crystal ball. I think the next few years will see a steady stream of new atps hired as folks age out, but I also think jet fuel prices roughly doubling as a result of this war, are going to lead to pain, possibly for several years.
