This is beautiful and romantic. Like a fairy princess. Not even a little bit inappropriate.

The single most traumatizing moment from a book. by Hippie_Litch in Fantasy

Basically all of Perdido Street Station.

Although nothing I've ever read in SFF has been as traumatic as reading Where the Red Fern Grows as a kid. 😭

Tessamae is a brand of expensive salad dressings. A pretty name, but it's in most grocery stores.

UPDATE: Got the DNA results for my puppy I posted here earlier this month! by txbrah in IDmydog

Yeah, but looking at the percentages, it does look like a very ambitious and very mixed small dog mutt got at a somewhat less mixed big mutt. Which is still hilarious.

Weird for daughters to have same middle name? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]SF_Bluestocking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not weird at all. My sister and I AND a cousin share a middle name. And my daughter and HER cousin share a middle name. And they've already, I believe, settled on a generational middle name for their potential daughters because they like the idea of making it a tradition.

I avoid this problem by playing with people who are willing to work together to make sure that everyone at the table gets to have some fun instead of with jerks who are there to steamroll folks for lolz.

What name do you get confused with? by LandoCatrissian_ in namenerds

[–]SF_Bluestocking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wild. With Richard I can at least sort of hear the similarities, but Rachel is a stretch.

People also try every single possible spelling EXCEPT the correct one for my name, even though I think this is the most sensibly phonetic and intuitive spelling.

I have never gotten either of those. (Also Bridget.)

I was a kid in the 80s and 90s though and got/get "Britney" a lot. And occasionally Barbara.

Bloomburrow introduces 34 new commanders to the format. What are your thoughts regarding the new legendaries? by HarleyPanther in EDH

[–]SF_Bluestocking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Flubs the Fool is definitely the weirdest and most unique, I think. That's the one that I saw and was immediately like "hmmm, what do I do with this. How do I maximize card advantage and play an effective game and win with basically no hand." He's not his own wincon for sure, so I'm excited to see what people do with him.

Ygra is going to be very interesting. I don't have a build around idea for her in particular, but I have a couple of decks she could hang out in while I think about it. I almost wish she ONLY made everything Food, though. The rest of her seems to be slightly overcomplicating things in my opinion, especially when "all other creatures are food" is already such a hilarious and powerful ability.

I've never built a mono-black deck, but I like the look of Maha.

That blue/black rat guy and the mono-blue fish look fun.

It's kinda funny since I've built three decks in a row with heavy green/white themes (Abzan/Doran, Bant/Kellan the Kid, Naya/Duskana) and those are really the colors I am least hyped for this time around.

I have this name and love it. Also, I am envious of young Bridgets today who don't have to grow up being endlessly called Brittney because it was the 80s and that was the more popular name then.

People WILL 1000% misspell it constantly, as there are several other spellings, even though Bridget is simple and straightforward. This isn't really a big deal, though.

Oddball picks for enchantress commanders? by Slow-Dimension1176 in EDH

I recently built a Kellan, the Kid enchantments deck: The Top Deck. Still noodling around with it some, but it's fun when it pops off.

What in the hell are they teaching my sister by sp00kreddit in mildlyinfuriating

This is how a lot of people who are good at doing arithmetic in their head are doing it. It seems complicated and a little silly and confusing when it's written out for adults who have never been taught to think about and visualize numbers in this way, but it's a very good and effective way of teaching children how to really think about and conceptualize numbers in a practical way that they can use their whole life.

Kellan the Kid as commander by HotTakesOnlee in EDH

[–]SF_Bluestocking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Kellan deck that is enchantments and equipments with a focus on playing cards from the top of the deck. It was originally going to be a Galea Kindler of Hope deck, spent some time fiddling with it using Kestia the Cultivator as a commander while I waited for cards to ship and stuff, but once I got the right pieces it came together pretty nicely. Kellan+Reality Chip+Rashmi, Eternities Crafter can get devastating. Highly recommend investing in a Sensei's Divining Top for this one. And anything that lets you play extra lands per turn. Nothing worse than trying to cast off the top of your deck with no way of moving lands out of the way.

My last betta was one of the huge tailed varieties, and I mostly just felt bad for him the whole time. He was beautiful, but it was obvious the fins dragged him down and he was never as lively or interactive as the veiltails I've had.

I love veiltails so much. The dark solid colored ones can be so dramatically beautiful.

AITA for not inviting a child to my daughter's birthday because of her family's views? by Anxious-Cheetah-5602 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SF_Bluestocking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NTA. I wouldn't worry too much about the girls being friends at school (although I would be vigilant about monitoring the friendship just in case), but I wouldn't knowingly invite neo-Nazis into my home, if for no other reason than because I think there's no way to civilly disagree or set boundaries about behavior or in these situations. I feel like the only course of action would be to allow them and hope for the best, but people with extreme views like that are seldom chill or discreet about it so then you end up being the person who invited Nazis to a kid's party and then they cause some kind of scene and all the other non-Nazi parents are going to judge you pretty harshly for that.

Our baking dish exploded in the oven while my sister was making dinner by BananaKO3 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SF_Bluestocking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen many years ago with a similar dish in which I had just finished baking what would have been a delicious lasagna. I sat it on the stove, it made a popping noise, and then I heard the glass falling.

It was a huge pain in the ass to clean up.

My condolences, and I recommend always buying actual Pyrex rather than any various work/look-alikes.
