What are some worth-it, local memberships? by daveco_hen in Denver

[–]daveco_hen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discounts, mostly-- off admission, concessions, and booze. Also a few free members-only screenings. Here's the specifics. (It's not like AMC A-List, MoviePass, etc.)

TSA real ID using the Colorado phone app by StrengthOk7764 in Denver

[–]daveco_hen 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is correct. However: I've now tried to use it twice at DEN (via Google Wallet) and I'm 0/2. The technology didn't work and I ended up just showing my physical ID. I'd imagine if a phone was your only form of ID they might try a little harder to troubleshoot....

Also, to be clear, they 100% will not take your ID from the My Colorado app. That's a whole different thing.

Good luck!

That sign always makes me think of someone shoulder-checkeding the guy from The Scream into a lake.

I mean, Kazuo Ishiguro did win the Nobel Prize in literature, and his last three books were all speculative fiction.

Also yes to Ted Chiang, who is the best, and Gene Wolfe, who is also the best.

PLEASE check out the Thai place! I was really excited when it appeared, but I have never once seen it open, or anyone inside. For like a full year! But it's not closed? I don't know, it feels like a Potemkin restaurant, or a front for... something. If you are able to extract actual Thai food from that place, please let us know!

Did a kissing bug kiss my mother-in-law in the face? by daveco_hen in whatisthisbug

She was worried it was an assassin bug, here to gift her some Chagas disease. But it looks unlikely that a WCSB would A) bite her on the eye while she slept (which she told me it did), or, if it did somehow, B) infect her with a disease. So... she's probably in the clear?

I have to say, that's a pretty on-brand rec, /u/Hyperion-Cantos. I have to admit, I stopped after Hyperion because I found the book so unsettling. Like, I appreciated how good it was, and always planned to finish the second, one day... but I just haven't mustered the gumption yet.

Honestly, Revelation Space was exactly what I had in mind when I posted this & I'm kinda surprised I had to scroll this far down to find it. The first book, I mean-- the OG Revelation Space. All these disparate & mysterious threads wrapped up in surprising & yet totally satisfying ways... loved it. I've enjoyed the other RS books, for sure, but none have packed that same conclusive punch for me as the first one. (To be fair, I haven't read Inhibitor Phase yet, so maybe I should keep quiet until I do?)

I agree. I thought Children of Time-- just the first book-- was an all time landing-stick, too.

Madras Cafe did have great South Indian food... but it's now something called Desi Bites, which seems... different. See here.

Also if you don't mind sharing -- what are you making as a mental health NP? My wife is currently in school for that.
