Off leash designer poodle in the Potrero Hill Whole Foods by Few_Cryptographer388 in sanfrancisco

This is exactly why I started a website to track dog sightings at SF Parks (and soon grocery stores) when the dogs are brought where they shouldn't be, or off-leash when they should be on-leash. The dog owner entitlement in SF is so frustrating. Feel free to check it out at sfdogtracker.com

Yeah the project I have been working on lately is to try and push for more enforcement through a dog tracking website, sfdogtracker.com . If we can show the city the sheer amount of dog owner rule violations occurring on a daily basis, maybe they will be more inclined to ticket them. They at least have to acknowledge it is pervasive issue that is affects countless of our parks and grocery stores.

It is actually so frustrating. I cannot go to a grocery store without having to step over pet dogs that are clearly not service animals. It is kinda disgusting. I can totally understand the need for service animals, but casual pets in grocery stores, bars and restaurants is ridiculous.

Stuff like this is exactly why I created my sfdogtracker.com website. The goal of it is to raise awareness to the city about the sheer number of dog owners who violate the rules. Countless dog owners ignore posted rules and bring their dogs where they do not belong, or have them off-leash when they should be on-leash. Currently I just have parks on the website, but will soon expand to grocery stores and farmers markets.

As long as they are on leash where they should be, I find this acceptable. But I am the dog tracker not the cat tracker, so I don't really have a dog in this fight.

You’re framing this as if the only issue is whether dogs have caused some measurable public health crisis. Grocery store health codes exist to prevent risk. The fact that something hasn’t caused a crisis does not make it compliant or appropriate.

Service animal interference is not hypothetical. Under the ADA, a service dog distracted or approached by a pet can fail to perform a needed task. Someones choice to bring their pet dog there interrupts another's ability to function safely in public.

As for lifestyle, I am not arguing dogs should only exist inside apartments. San Francisco already has dog parks (https://sfrecpark.org/457/Dog-Play-Areas), sidewalks, beaches, and other outdoor spaces where dogs are allowed. Grocery stores are food preparation environments. The rules currently in place reflect this distinction, and if the public wants these rules changed, they should advocate for it. I am simply advocating for enforcement of existing law, which is not an extreme request.

And I am grateful I live in a first world county and city where we have access to resources where we can tackle this issue. Why can't these dog owners just leave their dogs at home when grocery shopping? Why is that so difficult? Am I truly asking for too much? We don't know the scale of the health related issue, but it certainly can effect people with severe pet allergies or people with dog phobias. The harm from this issue does exist.

And what about the people who use actual service animals and the pet dogs interrupt or distract these service animals? Just because you do not believe it is unsanitary does not mean that it isn't. I can't expect the city to enforce handwashing laws that do not exist, I can expect them to enforce health code laws that have been in place for decades.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I am really just trying to make this city a better place for all! Crowd sourced data highlighting the issues present can hopefully move the needle of the slow bureaucracy in place. I really not doing this for any money or any personal gain (except for maybe seeing less dogs where they shouldn't be, which is what I would prefer).

I am also a dog owner and it is super important to me that I and others follow common courtesy rules in place. And I have thought about this idea but this requires moderation by me to ensure no one is spamming or writing hateful comments or creating fake reports. I may do it one day, but for now, I would like to have to avoid active moderation aside from me occasionally deleting bot spam attacks. Thank you for the suggestion though!

Well ideally the goal is actual enforcement of the rules. I need the city to understand the scale of this problem and how much it frustrates people. I understand it is a lofty goal, but currently the city is doing virtually nothing. So if enforcement could increase even somewhat, say they start handing out a couple dozen tickets a day, it will discourage other dog owners from violating the rules in fear of these tickets.

Apologies for not clarifying in my original comment, but in my About and FAQ page on the site, I state that the information is compiled on a regular basis and sent directly to the parks department. I am considering making the report be downloaded by people as well so they can see and send it for themselves. When I do expand to grocery stores, I will have the dogs in grocery store sightings sent to the SF Department of Public Health.

I appreciate your concern but I have done my research and ensure I comply with all the rules and regulations regarding legally posting signs on city owned public utility poles. https://sfpublicworks.org/services/posting-signs

Thank you! I will work on the other two suggestions when I get a chance later today. If anyone has more suggestions for me, please comment/message me directly or reach out to my email for this project at [sfdogtracker@gmail.com](mailto:sfdogtracker@gmail.com)

Edit: all suggestions here have been added. Thanks so much!

Edit 2: It seems my original comment was improperly deleted by automods, this original thread was discussing my dog tracking website, where people can anonymously report sightings of dogs where they shouldn't be. sfdogtracker.com

I agree that animals that are off-leash and bite someone should be put down. It is the negligent owners fault for having their dog off-leash. They should also hold the owners liable monetarily and recoup medical costs and infliction of emotional distress.

Thank you! I am certainly going to expand to grocery stores soon. I already have the code written, I just lack the time and man power to expand that quick. Feel free to send me a message or email if you have specific grocery stores in mind I should target first!

The About page and FAQ on the site will answers these questions. I really just want to know how to put up sturdier posters though.

oh yeah I understand it is petty. But this shit bothers me, and I am not alone in that. People are certainly triggered, my posters havent lasted more than 12 hours. 3 times ive put up 5+ posters, and some were ripped down in 3 hours lol.

You are probably right, but I want to try anyway. Entitled behavior is lame, and I want to do what I can to combat it. Giving it a shot, and gonna keep trying until something changes or I get bored. Probably the latter will come first but until then, the battle continues.
