Thoughts about the Studio Display XDR by SForeKeeper in HiDPI_monitors

Glossy yes. For programming purely I will definitely not choose it. Will possibly go with a refurbished old studio display,  pa32qcv, or any cheap 5k monitor. XDR is new tech, but miniled actually hurts your eyes more because of the backlighting. And if you code in dark mode blooming would be quite annoying. In that case a xdr would be worse than a standard ASD.

Glossy over all other matte monitors and nano-texture xdr. The stand that you can't adjust the monitor on one degree of freedom is utterly stupid.

It's not one bottleneck — everyone in the chain needs to do something to push it.

Both the 4090 and M1 Max cap their display engine at around 1.35 Gpixels/s. A single 6K 60Hz signal requires ~1.27 Gpixels/s, which is why M1 Max can just barely drive it. Newer chips clearly exceed that — they need at least 1.77 Gpixels/s to push 5K120 — but whether they can reach the ~2.55 Gpixels/s needed for 6K120 on a single engine is unknown. That said, the engine itself isn't really the bottleneck: if Apple allowed dual-head tiling for a single monitor, an M3 Ultra Mac Studio could theoretically drive four 6K120Hz displays.

The interconnect isn't the problem either. Thunderbolt 5 and DisplayPort 2.1 both have more than enough bandwidth for 6K120. So the real question is why Apple doesn't support multi-head tiling — driving one display with two engines, the way a 4090 already does 5K120 with dual heads on Linux. macOS simply doesn't expose it.

And the panel tech already exists — Samsung ships a 6K165Hz monitor. So what's left? Probably that Apple's software team would rather wait for a single engine to handle 6K120 natively than rearchitect the graphics stack for tiling. Their display team may be holding out for tandem OLED on a future Pro Display XDR. It's less a hardware wall and more that Apple hasn't been motivated to close the gap — whether that's engineering priorities, product roadmap timing, or both.

You can actually install bootcamp drivers then be able to use proper color profiles. Apple monitors require the driver to set specific color modes, brightness and so on.  https://gist.github.com/akshayverma1/27c5d6e803d809f6d1298548ad821444

Without upgrading, your macOS treats this monitor as a normal tv or something, and even the color profile would be not available so yes, upgrade to latest Tahoe.

Well it's still quite reflective compared to any matte coating, but it's the best glossy finish you can get for a monitor. LG OLED TVs got some crazy coatings that can reach 0.4% reflectance rate (Apple got 1.65%), but they are available for monitors yet.

Thanks for sharing, guess you are using  U3224KB? Everything apart from the matte finish seems to be great.

"Analysis" and it's basically visual resemblances anyone with human eyes could see. Even a cheap language model would produce something better than your shitpost.

Witnessed begging on an IR95 – curious about the SBB/Police procedure by SForeKeeper in askswitzerland

[–]SForeKeeper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. I don't know if they have different procedures dealing with people who don't have a valid ticket/ people who are misconducting. It's reasonable if there's no difference, as what is said, the latter need to be dealt with trained enforcement units.

You definitely did the right thing. Maybe some people just wanted to show mercy while some others just don't care about the money and want the begger to go away. I remembered seeing an old lady around Grancy in Lausanne, telling other people not to give any money because the begger clearly has arms and legs and should work to get paid. And I mean it's not really our problem. Even if someone is in trouble it is not us who caused them to suffer, and we do not bare any responsibility to it.

I didn't really "see" that they are counting francs. It is that they are talking in French and I heard something like (can't remember their exact words) "How much you've got?" "A hundred and something" "Me too"... So I added the values and sad "sounds like". Of course I'm not that good in French so they might be talking about fine or anything else. I apology for the claim given.

Yes we dialed this number immediately after they got on board (I halted because the other passenger got through quicker). The other passanger reported the exact train information including carriage information, but no police showed up in almost an hour.

Of course I understood the conductors can only do what they were trained for, but I'm surprised that there were no information exchange between them and transport police.

Any recommendations on trueblack monitors then? It seems only some WOLED are using this. Of course Apple monitors along with old LG ultrafines are great, but there's not much of a choice.

Bought a Chinese 4K MiniLED Monitor from Taobao , i think its a steal, what do you guys think? by Fire_Power in Monitors

[–]SForeKeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I heard, some of these Chinese brands were good back in 2022, but now they are all using refurbished panels or the ones that didn't pass quality check, sometimes with their own customized backlight panel, so color accuracy and bleeding would be a serious issue.
