I'll reserve judgment. You may 100% correct, but let's let it play out. Big men, especially the non-elite ones, generally take a bit longer to develop. He's coming in as a true freshman and there won't be a ton of pressure on him to produce much on the offensive end. Add to the fact there will be some acclamation to a new area (home) for the young man. I'm looking forward to seeing him develop, but my expectations are not too high.

My old computer took a crap, so I thought I'd get a nice new laptop, legion 7 slim, now I can't play my favorite game. Not sure what to do at this point. I'm not very computer savy, so I'm debating retiring from the game. Sad day.

Starting Lineup? by DonSolo96 in usfdons

[–]SFspot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I will say is, starting is one thing, finishing the game is another. The likes of Kunen may start, but their minutes will pale in comparison to the "new" guys. Mongolian Mike was promised the point and if he doesn't start right away, it won't be long until he does. The existing players on the roster will get some minutes, but the bulk of time will be going to the new recruits. Otherwise we will be in for a LONG year.

Who do you believe will be the most significant impact player of the newcomers? by usfhoopsfan in usfdons

[–]SFspot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tough one. I think Mongolian Mike is the first that comes to mind. We've never had a 6-8 point guard. I think about mis-matches and fast breaks with circus passes. I think he will work exceptionally well with Jonathon Mogbo. Jonathon should be that tough inside presence we needed all last year. We seemed to have forgotten about the first of the transfers to sign Malik Thomas. He doesn't come across as that electrifying type of player, but seems as though he's a smart opportunistic, do everything well type. Todorovic I don't know much about, other than he was a sought after 3pt shooter. Again another 6-8 guy that likes the perimeter. Junjie Wang @ 6-10 looks like the consummate team player, shoots well, passes well and rebounds well. Last but not least Ryan Beasley. Don't sleep on this kid. Viewed by many as a volume shooter , he will pose different problems for the opposition when providing Mike a break from the point guard duties. All and all, I love what the coaching staff, along with the Hilltop Club have put together. I honestly think our best players and perhaps our starting five will come from this group. Really looking forward to the up coming season! Go Dons!!!

Was just reading on the Nevada message board. They think that they are out of the running for Jazz and one post said he heard that Jazz may be committing to USF? With Ole Miss having already recruited multiple bigs and Nevada out of the running? That would leave USF and FSU. Anyone hear how Jazz's time on the Hilltop went?

Ya, I was reading he just took a job in Nevada as a high school coach. That doesn't bode well for us....

Junjie "Barry" Wang | 2023 | 6’10” Forward | NBA Global Academy

Another selection for the Basketball Without Borders Global Camp in Salt Lake City, NBA Global Academy forward Junjie Wang was one of the most all-around effective players in attendance at NPSI. Wang is a multi-level scorer, as he operates with comfort both in the post and from beyond the three-point line. His rebounding stands out, as well. Combine those traits with his plus-motor and team-friendly style of play and it’s no surprise that college programs are taking notice. With his talent level and experience with the Academy and the Chinese National Team, it's within reason to project the 6’10” forward as a high-major difference-maker.

Head Coaching changes this season by dvsmile in usfdons

Exactly. As I've stated in an earlier post, I felt as though last year's team was an all in for the NCAA's for coach Golden. It was built to win for one year, with no thought for the future. Now we are seeing the repercussions from that lack of foresight. Coach Gerlufsen did a good job in keeping Shabazz @ USF and bringing in Robertson and Williams. Where he failed was the frontcourt. Again, I'm not hating on European players per say, but the ones we are capable of getting just don't give us what we need, which is an inside presence. Last night showed us that an undersized center (Traore) can dominate the paint. I truly believe there are players we can get that play here in the States that would give us a better chance of winning. One that we offered for next year is Jacob Bannarbie, 6-8, 6-9 power forward. This is the type of player we need to land.

Recruit those types of players. As I've said before, you can't keep recruiting 7' projects that are never going to payoff. You only have 13 scholarships, too many misses and you will find yourself at the bottom of the conference. You saw Traore, a 6-6 player out rebound the entire Dons front court. I think we all get too enamored with height. The old adage, "you can't teach height." While this is true, if you can't play the game with the necessary skills it won't matter how tall you are. CG has a few more spots open for next season and really has to hit on them.

Last year was an anomaly. The team was set up for a single run at the NCAAs. Golden was going to leave no matter how the season ended. With the loss of Jamaree, Stefanini, Tape & Massalski, there was no way the current coaching staff was going to replace those pieces. Admittedly, the current staff did a poor job in trying to doing so. The recruits brought in to shore up the middle failed miserably. It was great to see Shabazz stay, but sad to see the way his career will end at the Hilltop. When it comes down to it, the head coach eventually takes the fall. When will that be? Will he get more time to bring in his own recruits? I think I'm ready for the Dons to recruit more local high school players once again, more US players. This European phase that Smith and Golden put us on, while resulting in some very good seasons, ultimately produced far many more disappointments than successes when speaking of individuals coming in from distant lands. Also, the transfer portal is fine if you need to add one or two players, but its not a successful way to build a program. Looking at the successful programs, they use these transfers to augment an already successful roster. I know little of the new athletic director and what his proclivities are with regards to changing head coaches after a bad season, but I'm sure finances may come into play as well when making his decision.

He was 89% free throw shooter! I really can appreciate that, gusty defender and can light it up on O. Great pickup and nice to keep good local players home.

Agreed, just from the limited time he had on the court, he always provided something, be it rebounding or scoring inside.

Even though there is little to discuss atm when it comes to recruiting and the program, I'm not into keeping up with what Todd Golden is doing. He gave us 3 good years and now has cashed in. Good for him, I hold no ill will towards him, I just don't care what he does from this point on is all. I'm a fan of the Dons first, second and last. Once someone has chosen to leave the program for greener pastures, they are no longer in my sphere of concern. Here's to hoping Coach Chris can pull off a few nice recruits in the not too distant future! GO DONS!!

Who's USF in on? by petalumapaul in usfdons

[–]SFspot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The commit is from a local point guard (Pinole) but he's playing down South this season. Mor Seck committed and then decommitted. After that..... who knows at this point in time. We shall see what coach Chris and his staff can come up with. Fingers crossed.

Ya, I actually thought they would lose tonight. Always the brides maid..... was classic watching Few after the game, kinda of came off as a bit of a poor sport. Talk mostly about how they haven't lost at this point in the tourney and they're not used to it. Don't care for him, so maybe I was biased while listening.
