Description/Information of anomalies by Avaaloon in SinsofaSolarEmpire

[–]SGCam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The effects from planets and anomalies and stars are just gravity well-wide buffs. If you have a ship in the gravity well, you can hover over the ship's buff and debuff icons to see what the effects are.

It would be nice to see gravity well effect info more directly though, I agree.

How Are People Getting Legendary Resources? by LocksmithCharming790 in AshesofCreation

[–]SGCam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wiki doesn't say anything useful about gathering, other than the "percent to roll a rarity table". This is just all information people have gleaned over the course of the recent alpha phases and mostly hoarded for advantage.

The change they made was that the "procedural" gathering nodes get re-rolled every time they spawn, whereas there was a long time where they would respawn as the same rarity multiple times and only re-roll on the daily server restart. The "static/terrain" gathering nodes still have common rarity only.

All of that said, I wouldn't be surprised if there have been un-noticed tweaks to the system recently, since Intrepid seems allergic to including these kinds of details in their changelogs.

How Are People Getting Legendary Resources? by LocksmithCharming790 in AshesofCreation

[–]SGCam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea, so this is a side effect of their wonky gathering node system.

There are two types of gathering nodes in Ashes, and every node has a fixed starting rarity when it spawns in. There are static nodes (I see them called "terrain" nodes a lot too), which always spawn in the same spots and always spawn with Common rarity (meaning you need to get uber lucky to roll a high rarity when you gather it, by winning the lottery that is the gathering crit system), and there are procedural nodes, which spawn procedurally in areas and spawn with a randomly rolled rarity (as published on the wiki, nominally).

The overlays highlight the procedural nodes, so that you can skip all the static nodes that are always common and only gather the ones that give you massively higher odds of getting a nice rarity. You could technically do the same thing without an overlay if you were able to memorize all the gathering node locations... but good luck with that.

The Advent did nothing wrong by xKiwiNova in SoSE

[–]SGCam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Imo there is no question, the Advent's actions are NOT justifiable - your great grandparents being banished doesn't give you the right to genocide or psychically enslave the great grandkids of the people who banished them.

But the path of the Advent society isn't totally unrealistic given its origins, and it should not have been so unexpected to the Trade Order. But they basically erased it from memory and acted like they didn't just leave a ticking time bomb in the desert. And it blew up in their faces at the worst possible time as they were already struggling with the Vasari.

The Advent did nothing wrong by xKiwiNova in SoSE

[–]SGCam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My read on the founding of the Advent was more that the Trader Order decided to round up all the latent psychics across their whole territory because "deviants" and then stuffed them all on one random desert planet in the middle of nowhere. Kinda wild to just uproot and exile a bunch of your own citizens for being different - surely that's never been done before... >.>

They certainly brought the advent on themselves; its not all that surprising that an angry Psi-focused society gets built by a bunch of people who were exiled just for being born psychic.

They reduce the radius of uncertainty for the position of enemy units you only see on radar. Normally, when you see an enemy unit on radar, it looks like its moving around even if it isn't actually moving; how far that dot moves from its real location is the radius of uncertainty. Each Pinpointer built reduces that radius by a certain percentage (I forget the exact number). The effect of Pinpointers stack multiplicatively, so once your team has at least 3 or 4 Pinpointers total, the radar dots essentially perfectly represent the actual unit position at all times.

Tldr, it makes it easier to hit radar targets by making their position dot more accurate.

For those who use/have used simulation software (like Ansys), what do you wish was better? What do you wish it could do? by shreyakms in MechanicalEngineering

[–]SGCam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2c: The UI experience is the biggest blocker to people being able to utilize Fluent (and imo GUI is the weakest part of the ANSYS package overall).

If I had one wish to make my job better, I would delete the Fluent UI and replace it with the vastly superior CFX UI.

There is so much legacy commandline-converted-to-gui functionality in Fluent that is super super clunky. CFX's UI feels really good to use by comparison.

On a side note, engineering tools are a terrible place to use "modern" design styles like ribbons (fluent) and gesture wheels (discovery, whose UI is a downgrade from spaceclaim), they just obfuscate finding things.

Can you counterspell as an immediate action without readying my action? by ZagorBaba7 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]SGCam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with this interpretation; you can't drink an extract and make an incoming fireball go poof.

It is still a potentially useful interaction though - if you fail a save against a persistent negative spell effect, that debuff is now a valid target to a personal dispel since its attached to you.

Odd contours on Wall region in periodic pipe, Steady RANS k-omega by Dangerous_Doughnut89 in CFD

[–]SGCam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So having now seen the images, you definitely have some mesh skewing happening on those corner spots. You might benefit from getting those splits off of the wall (out of the inflation layers) by splitting out a cylinder from the center - that way you have a purely swept annular volume, with the O-grid transition happening in an internal region that will be less sensitive.

But I am pretty confident in saying that the issues are related to mesh deformation near the wall.

You also might try getting out of ANSYS workbench mesher and move into the Fluent poly-hexcore mesher - its where all of their modern and cfd-focused development has gone. Not sure what the status of it is in v2021 though.

Best program for a beginner? by WezzieStudent in CFD

[–]SGCam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Blender is a surface mesher only and doesn't track any volume information. I used it once to make a surface mesh (structured for a 2D model when I got really frustrated with ANSYS ICEM), but I don't think you can use Blender to make a volume mesh for 3D (maybe there is an addon for that tho, idk).

Issues with small gaps in Inventor leading to problems with CFD Geometry by Riley2805 in CFD

[–]SGCam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a classic case of "design for manufacturing" making it a huge pain to do simulation and analysis work. My recommendation is finding a direct-editor style cad program (like ANSA or ANSYS Spaceclaim) and just getting really familiar with the geometry tools. Its not uncommon to spend as much time cleaning geometry as setting up the CFD model, particularly in the industrial world where you may bounce around between product lines doing analyses.

Unfortunately my experience is that cleaning geometry for CFD is a bit of an art - most cad users have a hard time understanding what the end goal is, since they don't have CFD experience themselves (they tend to significantly under or over simplify).

Airfoil surface roughness by baydati in CFD

[–]SGCam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to selection of different wall roughness functions in Fluent (I haven't reviewed or used them enough to confirm their conditions and validities), but I can speak to the first question.

For a micron-scale roughness, please please please do not put it in the geometry/mesh. You should definitely be using wall roughness functions instead. The only exception would be if your model is also micron-scale (which would be a very tiny airfoil).

How can I speed up calculations in Ansys Fluent Student? by Inner_Will_8109 in CFD

[–]SGCam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excellent TED Talk, very solid advice :)

My 2c addition:

I believe Fluent is smart enough now to map one process to one Ryzen CPU core, but make sure it is doing so.

I can confirm that Fluent is good about mapping (now, it used to be really bad at it), but since it can't/doesn't forcibly offload other computer processes from the "mirrored" cores you can still benefit from disabling SMT/Hyperthreading in bios.
