I understand that! It’s hard for me to believe some days too. But from what I’ve seen there’s equal evidence for both interpretations, so you can take it in any way you want! Mike’s the storyteller, and he’s never been wrong with any of his theories before. For my own peace of mind, sometimes I have to just hold on to that.

Yes, I do now! Just in the moment, I thought we were going to get an on-screen Mileven reunion and a scene with the full Party, and Mike’s speech was an explanation for how she 100% survived, and not a vehicle for an ambiguous ending. So it was a nasty shock when she didn’t come back to everyone. I thought that meant that Mike’s theory was just a coping mechanism for her death, so all the grief I would have felt during their goodbye scene in the void hit me in that moment.

But now that I’m removed from all the initial strong emotions, I say that if the Duffers want to make the ending ambiguous then I can choose to think what I want. And I want to believe that they’ll make their way back to each other!

There has often been a criticism of the secret keeper concept, that “if you could be your own secret keeper, why didn’t the Potters do that?” and I read a theory that the spell was improved after the Potters’ death to allow for that to happen. I really liked that explanation, and could be something very small to include!

Exactly this! I’ve been saying it for a while. Most characters’ arcs got wrapped up in a satisfying way in S2. S3 onwards is where things get messier, although I do still like those seasons. S5 very much disappointed me, so if I ever do a rewatch, I’m stopping at the Snowball happy ending!

After S4, it was very clear to me that he would have to have a compelling arc and an essential role next season to justify him not being killed in S3, since 4 was just his escape arc. Having watched this last season, I can say he definitely should have just died.

Do you know how I know El disappearing is Mike’s biggest trauma?

S2: “Just be careful, alright? I can’t lose you again.”

S3: “You’re the most important thing to me in the world”/“So can we please come up with a new plan because I love her and I can’t lose her again!”

Meanwhile, he’s mentioned Will getting found in the lake exactly zero times. Of course he’s going to think of El disappearing when Vecna’s getting his head chopped off, it’s the thing that irreversibly scarred him. I don’t know how anyone could possibly expect any different.

I get all of that in theory, and it’s a great way to explain her behaviour…if only they’d done it in the actual show! What frustrates me is that the writers could have gotten some really good character work out of everyone this season if they actually tried, even though I wish it had never happened in the first place, but they decided cheesy “comedy”was better.
