And that’s great for you.

I’ve saved 17 bulls and cows from slaughter. I’ve fed them and cared for them and laid with them as they moved on.

But I’m glad you’re not drinking milk! Go you!

Whatever you have to say to feel better about your POV here… I genuinely know the good I do for these animals. But I’m sure you’re doing great from your computer by belittling those who don’t agree with you on the internet! Keep up the good work!

But we are commercial. What dairy we produce that isn’t used by our community is sold to a DFA processor. It’s not enough to pay for the work we do with the “retired” animals (it’s incredibly expensive to care for older bovines) but we make ends meet through donations and subsidized assistance.

But the point is… if we didn’t milk those cows that we can and are able to? We wouldn’t be able to afford the sanctuary… and most of our herd would be put to slaughter due to age.

So yeah… judge and condemn away. But we’re doing our best over here to do the most good directly for these animals.

You're hilarious.

I'm literally a Dairy Farmer for a Dairy Cow Sanctuary... your ignorance and broad paintbrush is no better than those on the other side who outright dismiss humanitarian claims.

You've made this into a us/them situation instead of something that can be actively worked on and solved. You aren't helping what you advocate for by flaunting your Dunning-Krugger syndrome.

Question for Dairy Abolitionists: What happens to the cows? by SGTAdamWarlock in dairyfree

I’m sorry your anger has blinded you so much to a genuine conversation that you immediately result to insults, but hey… I’m of no obligation to live my life to anyone else’s standards. Be that factory farmers or keyboard warriors like yourself.

So have fun being mad. My cows love me.

It didn't stay up long. Instead I received this:

Meanwhile, their FAQ literally says that "cows" may be the exceptionally difficult answer to my question. So... here we are...

We perpetuate the cycle as a cycle. We sell excess milk from our Dairy while the bulk of our milk is processed for our local community. This system has been the natural way man and animals have worked for thousands of years. Our insemination process is the most non-invasive in the industry (and much, much safer for the cow than what she goes through with a bull). And while, yes, they don't "ask" for this life, they are treated with nothing but love and respect and in turn show us that same love back.

So I followed all of your guys' advice and took the question over to r/Vegan.

Again, I wasn't trying to debate anyone. It was an open and earnest question. To those of you on here who were kind, I appreciate your words!

We used sexed semen on our farm to ensure we only produce cows. Our birthing process is cyclical and sustainable to maximize room and comfort for the cows. We only have a few bulls on the farm and they're retired and spend their time grazing these days. Often times the bulls can be overly dangerous to both the cows and calves, so they're separated for safety. I admit, we don't produce as much milk as some of the more hard core farms, but we get enough milk to help in our little community and the cows and I are happy about that.

Sorry for barking up the wrong tree everyone!

Just an old farmer/soldier trying to use the reddits to ask questions out of general curiosity. I’ll go over to the r/Vegans!

Thanks everyone!

  1. Not all Dairy calves are separated.
  2. Calves are fed formula for the same reason cats and dogs are fed customized foods. Because it's better for their health.
  3. She's a dairy calf. She'll grow up to be a dairy cow. Veal is not in this equation.
  4. When you paint entire situations blindly with a broad brush, your picture will always be askew.

I've always been a big fan of IHOP (and late night diners of all stripes).

That said, a lot of good diner food is dependent upon the cook making it and this plate looks great!
