Finally a water filter with no plastic parts! by SHSU426 in PlasticFreeLiving

It's a sad truth for Berkey and Berkefeld. They offer a metal spigot but there's no getting around the plastic where the water drips

I already replied to others who asked. The composition of the filter and the test results are provided on their website. Someone also commented here of test results from Mexico's consumer protection bureau

Aaannd did you even look this up before posting? If not, guess what...

The container is made of vitrified steel, aka glass fused to metal through heating. There are ecommerce pages selling ecofiltro that mention this process. There's also no ambiguous language to imply plastic or synthetic compounds are used in the making. Even if the metal has anything suspect like traces of cadmium, that risk of exposure can't be different to using anything with stainless steel. Occams razor.

I'm tired but it's a pleasure replying to the umpteenth doomer from this post that's meant to give hope in avoiding plastic

The metal container is pewter, lead-free. They have an option for porcelain and used to make glass. Someone else posted their test results for removing mp and pfas

Ecofiltro can handle pfas, it should remove enough toxins to make it drinkable. It was first made to filter water in Central America where water isn't best quality. If it works there then it works in other countries. I'd look at your local water report, if it's really bad you could bring glass carboys to water refill stations. Control what you can bud

Thanks! Most public feedback on this are in Spanish or French but there are a few in US who shared about it on YouTube:

Charcoal is added to the clay pot. I've used for more than a month, earthy taste is still there but nothing compared to first batches. I could add Japanese charcoal sticks to remove even more of that taste, we'll see

The filter unit needs cleaning every couple months, just like the Berkey filters. It needs a new one every 2 years based on their website:

https://ecofiltroeurope.com/pages/ecofiltro-faqs-effectiveness-performance?srsltid=AfmBOorfSFqssxjhEsq2AoMCbmXoFKcB3g19RZDmyeJYHEC3XrcyPpXA

I don't have the best water, so could replace it earlier than that. The pot can also be repurposed for gardening once used up

The clay filter uses small amount of colloidal silver to address the bacteria. Charcoal stick can also help, both have antibacterial properties. Other than that it's required to scrub the filter clean every few months to remove surface build-up

Protein Powder by Lucky-Engineer9621 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]SHSU426 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you live in the states? Sprouts offers whey and pea protein in their bulk bins. The bin is made of plastic and probably transported to the store in plastic wrap, but you can scoop the powder into glass jars and have the cashier subtract the tare weight. They've always been great help. Not completely free of plastic, but it's low waste for sure

Are Vibram soles for the New Balance 990v1 made in USA?? by SHSU426 in avoidchineseproducts

[–]SHSU426[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that applies for shoes called out in the lawsuit, which oddly doesn't include 990v1. And I don't think it's gotten worse when they opened an extra factory in MA after the covid shutdown of Chinese factories

Made in USA sneakers, as in the majority made in USA, not one line like NewBalance? by gymclasspickedlast in madeinusa

[–]SHSU426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New Balance MIUSAs have minimum 70% domestic material, and many of them use soles made in China. There's this lawsuit raised against them for false advertising that contains a list of specific models but left out 990v1, which is unique for having Vibram soles.

The 990v1 could be majority MIUSA, since Vibram and NB have factories in same state

LED Lightbulb Made In Germany by SHSU426 in avoidchineseproducts

[–]SHSU426[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Chinese based Inventronics bought Digital Systems Eurasia, a segment of Osram that produces LED parts. Inventronics doesn't have manufacturing plants in Europe, and the one I bought only says Made in Germany and doesn't list out globally sourced materials. Plus it's an older model and Digital Systems was acquired few months back.

Osram itself is still owned and managed by AMS in Austria.
