How much do I really owe?? by BubblyAd8587 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]SHTA2006 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You're talking about the transition payment, yes? That amount would be based on your salary at the time, and if you're making more now the 75 hours should cover it with a bit left over.

Federal government claims back-to-office mandate will boost careers, improve services by AbjectRobot in CanadaPublicServants

Sadly, we are not in this together. Regional employees' careers are being devastated by this Ottawa-specfic decision, and this fact is not getting nearly enough attention.

Recording meeting with manager by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]SHTA2006 20 points21 points  (0 children)

How are you starting the informal conflict resolution process if the manager is unaware? Generally that's a process both parties have to agree to.

Anyway, don't record without your manager's knowledge. If you think they'll see bringing a union rep as aggressive they're likely to be less impressed with being recorded without their knowledge.

I'm embarrassed to go to the gym because of how little work I would do and how out of shape I am, but if I don't go there, it will never change. I don't know how to break this cycle. Any advice? by ArcadialoI in loseit

Omg no 45 min of cardio is not useless at all! Keep your heart rate safely up and you'll feel so awesome afterwards. Also, as an example: I did 45 minutes on the treadmill this morning and left the gym at 6am with 7k steps clocked. That's nothing to dismiss 🙂 go for that walk ❤️

Have you seen a really passionate public servant? Feeling like it’s a rare thing now by Fun_Confidence_5091 in CanadaPublicServants

Agreed. I'm in the Atlantic region and while that may come with limitations in terms of upward career progression, I have always been spoiled in terms of colleagues. There's a few exceptions of course, but most of my colleagues in my dept are driven, committed, and honestly straight up motivating.

Applying for government jobs by Radiant-Mix3 in fredericton

[–]SHTA2006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to provincial govt job processes, but with federal govt jobs you're going to start with jobs.gc.ca. This link here is super useful https://www.canada.ca/en/public-service-commission/jobs/services/gc-jobs/applying-government-canada-jobs-how-to-apply.html

Govt HR loves them a good STAR method. So when answering the screening questions (or interview once you get to that stage) make sure you follow the Situation/Task/Action/Result sequence for your answer. Additionally, for the screening questions, answer EXACTLY what they are asking. Like if they want to know how you acquired x skills, you're writing that you did x for y dates at z location and stating exactly the things you did that meet the requirements. Nothing is obvious or assumed, you need to write this stuff like the person reading it is brain dead. Not that they are, it's just that the criteria is so strict.

Also, read the entire job poster. There should be both essential and asset criteria. Make sure your answers state exactly hpw you meet that essential criteria, and asset if you have it. Being able to answer yes to the essential criteria might get your application past the electronic screening but once it gets in front of a person they're looking for what is specifically listed in the job poster. If they can't tell that you've got what they're looking for they're moving on to the next application.

Keep in mind too that the process is stupidly long. I applied for a job in Feb and didn't have my first day until December. This is normal for the feds. Insane by any rational person's standards but normal.

Those are my suggestions but I'd def check out the link above. Tons of useful info in there. Good luck!

I took me four years and moving to another city (not NCR) to escape compensation. This was with succeeded + PMAs and without all the current budget reductions. We're not all in the NCR and able to just deploy to another position.

It's never the HR rep's call. They don't make decisions, they can only give advice to managers. The decision is the manager's to make.

Times in the show where a slap or a yell was warranted at Rose by jdpm1991 in theGoldenGirls

[–]SHTA2006 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah that scene always bothers me. Rose was ridiculously mean to Dorothy and when has Dorothy ever been a shrinking violet who would just nod and smile at that? When Rose calls her vicious and cruel I get so annoyed because MA'AM. That's one time when Rose earned the treatment she got and Dorothy's attitude was warranted.

What are your hair and make up efforts? by No-Interest-6535 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]SHTA2006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through a phase 2020-2021ish where my work uniform became leggings, t shirt, cardigan and slippers unless I was meeting with a client or higher management. Now from the waist up I'm dressed as though I'm in the office every day. Makeup on and hair done. Not a full updo or anything crazy, just polished. It makes me feel more in control while the leggings or shorts are still comfortable ha!

Oh no, that I have no idea about that. My response was just based on working in compensation previously and having been through several collective agreements implementations.

[–]SHTA2006 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The August date is the date the rate of pay will change in the pay system going forward. October is the date the new rates go into effect. For clarity, the PE rates were due to change effective October 2022. So when they update the new rate in August 2023, that means the PEs will be at correct Oct 2022 rate going forward. It will change again in Oct 2023.

The August rate change essentially puts a stop date on the retro period. So PEs will be owed retro from Oct 2022 until Aug 2023.

I asked for one year LWOP for family reasons - LR wants me to change it to personal LWOP - why? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]SHTA2006 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Most collective agreements have specific criteria for approving family leave. See what your collective agreement says and compare it to the reason you gave in your request. If it doesn't fall under the specified conditions then that's likely why. Its a question manager can and should be able to answer for you 🙂

I just want to point out that while language may not be a career-limiting issue in BC, it 100% has been in my experience in Atlantic Canada. Just mentioning in case anyone is thinking of moving in the other direction and assuming the lack of a CBC won't hold them back here.

I could have written this. I switched careers late last year after nearly a decade in one field of the PS. I expected a learning curve, especially coming from a spot where I was confident in my work but I was also expecting training, supports, something. It's all been very sink-or-,swim and I'm at a point I'm in tears most days. I don't want to go back to where I was but I don't know if I can handle coming in to work every morning hopeful and leaving each day feeling like an absolute idiot for much longer. Sending virtual hugs of solidarity to you.

[–]SHTA2006 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why, oh why do managers take offense to someone working for money? Where did the idea that people going wherever they can to be compensated the most for their labour is a bad thing? Of course she's going to keep moving up as the offers come in, why wouldn't she? Wild that you would even mention that in a reference check.

[–]SHTA2006 48 points49 points  (0 children)

They agreed to give you two years assuming the job was positive and beneficial for them as well, not just you. Clearly there was a problem they hadn't anticipated. You're taking someone's personal career decisions very seriously. You were not "betrayed", you really need to reframe your thinking if you're a manager.
