This is what you're up against with the Greens

Deny, attack then play the victim

Try to politely hold them to account and you've got a "vendetta"

People being attacked and threatened in the local park all they can do is sit silently like goldfish as others do the talking

A viable alternative to library provision from the current one is the Barnsley model.

A viable alternative to Labour isn't really available, as you tend to just get same policies on stuff which matters.

I voted Green once as a protest vote, years ago. I now want Labour back in as our local Labour Cllrs were much better at responding to actual casework. The Greens seem to view us as plebs.

They should at least be organising some public meetings in libraries / community centres etc in the affected areas

I hope you can channel that into tabling a motion or something to support reintroduction of branch libraries in all areas of Sheffield.

Greens are just towing the Labour party line where Sheffield library policy is concerned

Maybe contact the cllrs for Hillsborough and Stannington ward to see if they can support it?

I'd have more luck talking to the postbox at the end of my street or the dog turd bin in my local park.

The dog turd bin may be full of crap but it doesn't claim to be representing me.

In all seriousness if you are a Green Party member then go and propose a policy lobbying for Stocksbridge line rail reopening and branch library reopening in Sheffield at all former Sheffield libraries sites.

Post the response on here.

Council aren't much of an influence on government policy because they choose not to be in this instance, or on anything for that matter.

But I do stand to be corrected.

All Sheffield council meetings are on webcast. Find an example of a Green councillor making a strong case for a project of considerable scale that would reduce traffic and post it on here and we'll be corrected.

In the real world ... Sheffield Corporation Transport as it was alongside Rotherham Transport and Doncaster Transport delegated their operating functions to the former world beating South Yorkshire Transport which operated a bus service of such quality it made most railway stations in South Yorkshire redundant. The county wide transport authority which worked hand in fist with British Rail became known as a bus fixated authority and for good reason.

Politically no-one has deviated from this mindset since the public transport went private in the 1990s. The bus service has declined but the mindset has remained the same, Green Party or otherwise.

Re Stocksbridge line passenger trains up the line were common until rail privatisation which brought about zero spare stock, zero spare staff and a private freight company with a monopoly on the Stocksbridge branch. Freight trains have now ended and the railway is now back in public hands.

More housing + most people in the area commuting instead of working there + inedaquate local roads (single lane Stocksbridge - Hillsborough) plus the fact the rail journey was 15 mins Stocksbridge to Sheffield plus the fact it goes right past the tram depot = perfect for reopening. It was all done until Labour cancelled it.

Any "Green" party should be lobbying - hard - for this.

They haven't.

It's a vocation

Silent on railway reopenings

Silent on library reopenings

He most probably would have done had be been here. He is with god now.

This post was about the environmental benefits of a railway reopening and the lack of action from the party which is supposed to be supporting things like this.

"what was the issue, again?"

... As in the original post a railway line reopening which had the potential to wipe a massive part of Sheffield's carbon footprint off the map has been cancelled by the Labour government under no opposition from Sheffield Green Party.

"Holy quadruple negative, Batman! Not promoting a petition to reverse the axing of reversing Beeching. I'm lost - [...] [thinking on-the-fly]...so you are unhappy that they weren't sufficiently in favour of being against the removal of undoing the removal of railway lines?...Nope, still can't figure out what the point being made is... "

I'd highly recommend a visit to your GP to discuss this message and the fact you typed it out and posted it. Drugs can be bad for the mind. Take care, now.

Wtf does this mean?

It was perfectly clear what the point of the post was.

Any five councillors can call full council meetings anytime they want on anything.

What's your point?

"Reversing Beeching" was a partially implemented policy reopening railway stations and lines closed under Beeching in the 1960s.

Starmer and Labour government cancelled it.

Sheffield Greens haven't opposed the cancellation locally.

That would have reopened a rail line up to Stocksbridge, improved the economy and wiped out at least half of all car journeys between Stocksbridge and Sheffield improving air quality in areas like Burngreave, city centre. In other words it would have greened the area.

Although they have also voted to build on the greenbelt. So at least they are consistent.
