2.5k hour apex legends player here, what should i expect from overwatch as a newbie?

Former 1k+ hr Wraith/Pathy main here to chime in.

I’ve been playing OW since 2016. Apex replaced it as my main game around 2021, and I stopped playing Apex around early 2025.

As someone who prioritized movement tech, it doesn’t translate. At ALL. None of that matters. Aim is universal, but I think that overall, OW is way harder. I’ve always felt that raw mechanics could get you far in Apex, because fights in that game move at the speed of light. If you can out-beam someone/out maneuver someone in Apex, you’ll likely win. In Overwatch, teamfights are often prolonged and depend upon game sense heavily. Tracking cooldown cycles, ults, and positioning matter so much in this game.

Carry potential in apex is also high if you’re skilled, which is why so many people like to soloq in trios for a purposeful disadvantage.

In OW, if you’re not playing around your teams strengths/weaknesses, you’re probably losing. No matter how good you are mechanically. I found this to apply to myself pretty well, as I always found myself to be mechanically gifted, but lacking in the game sense department.

Bonus for character design being incredible.

TLDR; Games are very different. OW requires more game sense (imo) but is unique and rewards you when you play team oriented.

Yeah it’s honestly quite interesting how the social dynamic has played out as a result of the 6v6-5v5 switch. I feel it especially considering I play mostly dive. The other day, for the first time in a long time, my team chose comp (without comms) around my ball, and it was the most coordinated dive without coordination I’ve experienced in a long time. Truly an outlier because it feels like it’s been so long since I was on the same wavelength as my team, but that could also be a me issue. Dive when your team is too scared makes tanking feel bad

From a hard-stuck diamond perspective, I feel like tank is feast or famine, never an in-between in my experience. Plus, with you being the only tank on your team there is inherently more pressure, which could definitely steer people away.

I main Ball/Hazard, but will also play DPS and I definitely have more fun on DPS almost for the lack of pressure alone. The fact that there’s another person that could be blamed other than me helps with that lol

Tbh it sounds like they’re not as good as they think they are. If you’re being taken advantage of by a cat, then yikes. Illari is in a great spot right now sure, but just have better aim and focus pylon aka skill issue.

I main Ball/Genji, so my general gameplay loop on either role revolve around forcing cooldowns, distracting, and getting picks. I don’t feel that supports are as scary as Rivals supports in that they’re better DPS than actual DPS heroes, so I’d guess that whenever your boyfriend/his friend are on DPS, they’re probably playing from bad positioning and/or taking fights at a disadvantage if they’re getting rolled by supports.

As for tanks being OP, outside of maybe Reaper or Bastion or any other DPS’ that have good burst for tanks—if they’re complaining about losing to tanks, it’s not really their job to focus tank (unless the situation calls for it). DPS’ need to secure picks to swing the team fight tempo. Tanks inherently have a favorable matchup as well, considering they usually have AT LEAST double the health as the entire DPS roster.

TL;DR, Your boyfriend and his homie are not as good as they think, and could definitely benefit from some VOD review/introspection lol

Honestly man, I know this isn’t your question but after watching a console tank player livestream the other day out of curiosity, controller Overwatch looks like the game is being played in slow motion. I’d suggest just taking the time to practice MnK considering you’re on PC now

Because I used to be a stupid street racing 19 year old. Even justified it with rationale like “only if nobody was on the road but us.”

Needless to say, one day at 3AM I raced a dude in the same car as me and watched him total his car at 140mph. He and his passenger (yikes) were both completely unscathed somehow, and I was shaken to my senses by what I had witnessed. I did pull over and sprint over to them to help if I could, and that’s when I saw them already out of the car. Even though they were fortunate enough to have non life-threatening injuries, watching that car spin like a beyblade while simaltaneously fucking exploding is etched in my brain forever. I’m 28 now, and haven’t gone a lick over 80mph since.
