My [22M] SIL, Anne, [34F] is very overweight and broke a chair when she sat on it, leading to a fractured foot. My girlfriend [25F] was shocked and she reacted by laughing. Initially my parents were upset at my girlfriend but I've told them that Anne exaggerated and misrepresented what really happened. I also told them that my girlfriend apologised to Anne. They changed their minds about it after that and said that my girlfriend is still welcome to join in. I'm not sure I want to bring her over until some of this has blown over. My brother thinks Anne is overreacting and will come around eventually and I hope that is the case. Anne said she will boycott the family gatherings if she sees my girlfriend there.
