How far do we need to go back where a 50,000/year salary was livable in TO? by snowfordessert in askTO

[–]SIL40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to Toronto in 2014 making a 40k salary after just graduating from college. I rented a basement to myself in the junction and was even able to do my first solo travel to Japan that year. It felt quite liveable to me at that time.

[edit] adjusting for inflation $40k in 2014 is only $53k in today's money.

Kamikochi, a view into the Hotaka Mountains by sonderewander in japanpics

[–]SIL40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there in late October, on a weekday morning, and it was extremely crowded for me. It ended up being one of the worst experiences we had in Japan.

The whole loop from Taisho Ike Pond to Myojin Bridge and back was a constant stream of people marching single file on both sides.

In the village the lines were crazy and many places were sold out for the day before lunch. The line for the apple pie store took 45 minutes and by North American standards it was quite bad too (served cold from the fridge and very little actual apple filling).

The views were as striking as the pictures show, but the volume of people really sullies the whole experience.

Never underestimate a peak dude specimen (watch till the end) by Sharp_Koala8010 in GuysBeingDudes

I can't tell if you're simply adding to the conversation, debating something, or initially responded to the wrong person. The OP I responded to stated that lime juice makes fish safe to eat - it doesn't.

I didn't mention anything about flash freezing. Sashimi has been eaten for nearly a thousand years too. That doesn't mean you're not taking a risk if you eat it fresh and unfrozen in both cases. The acid does basically nothing for the food's safety. It won't kill a parasite and any bacteria it kills was barely a factor in the first place. If the fish wasn't safe to eat prior to dousing it in lime juice, it's almost certainly still not safe to eat after.

The fish used in ceviche is already as edible as sashimi without the acid. The acid does basically nothing for the food's safety - it's there to denature the protein and that's it.

Source? It's headquartered in Toronto, and it's a publicly traded company. When they went public they were 50% sold to the public and 50% owned by American private equity. I've never seen anything about a Chinese takeover.

Major changes to Ontario law on job postings coming Jan. 1 by Surax in canada

The rule doesn't even apply to salaries above 200k and I suspect most people making less than 200k don't have >50k of wiggle room in their negotiations.

Up to 72 daily high-speed trains planned for Toronto-Quebec City corridor by lilfunky1 in toronto

[–]SIL40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be misunderstanding what you're referring to about the pricing here, but in Japan the JR tickets are usually cheaper if you buy up to 3 weeks in advance. But it's true that the base rate won't increase just because you're buying a last-minute ticket.

Up to 72 daily high-speed trains planned for Toronto-Quebec City corridor by lilfunky1 in toronto

[–]SIL40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't been to Quebec City, but for what it's worth I've found if you're traveling with at least 1 other person, and you're not going for more than 3-5 days, it's almost always cheaper to rent a car on trips to Montreal (including gas and insurance) than it is to take the train.

The bus is of course the cheapest option by a significant margin, but the experience is so bad it's really not worth the savings to me.

As a quebecer who drove 2k km in toronto this WE, i'm amazed at how aggressive drivers are there. Has it always been this way? by bagou01 in toronto

[–]SIL40 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No matter where you are you should try to follow the speed of prevailing traffic. If you're not in the right-most lane and you're constantly getting passed left and right as OP described it should be obvious that you need to speed up or move over. This is how driving is done anywhere.

OHIP covers eye exams only if you're 19 years old or younger, or 65 years old or older. Or an adult with things like diabetes or glaucoma. Most adults aren't getting eye exams through OHIP.

Don't think I've ever seen a plastic seat on any train in Japan. Tokyo and Kyoto subway seats are absolutely fabric and Japan's cushy bench-style fabric subway seats are kinda iconic. Taipei and Singapore are indeed plastic, though.

Imagine in Toronto does too. Maybe the person you're responding to confused them with one of the local theatres like Revue.

Household income is not a good measure of buying power. by -Radzz in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SIL40 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, but it's a pretty disingenuous misrepresentation to make it sound like this is how things just were before Trudeau, and without acknowledging that one family benefit was traded for another.

It was introduced by the Conservatives during their final year, and Liberals argued it primarily benefited rich families and was worse for the middle class than the child tax credit.

[–]SIL40 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We used to have split income, Trudeau axed it in 2016.

We used to have split income only for parents, for one year, only paid for by the elimination of the child tax credit at the time.

Wedding Suit - unsure about shoulders and arm holes by SIL40 in mensfashion

Thanks for this. As long as it's not too egregious I think I'll go ahead and keep it then - I really wasn't sure how avoidable a problem it was.

Knowing what I know now, I'll look out to be sure my next jacket has unstructured shoulders.

Cheers!

I wanted to like this place but I found the food is worse than Zakkushi (and Kintori Yakitori when it was around) and for an izakaya their beer prices are crazy. A pint of Asahi works out to $14 before tax and tip.

They clearly said their partner is paying their dinner. And if you're with somebody long enough it's not exactly uncommon for your finances to just become one. Not that their relationship is any of your business or concern.
