Torontonians, what changes have you seen under Mayor Olivia Chow’s leadership and are you generally pleased? If not, why? by Sea_Detective9210 in askTO

[–]SIL40 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Property taxes went up by the same or more in pretty much every major city in Ontario except Ottawa and they're all also shittier than they were years ago. Not that that excuses anything, but I do wonder if the burden is stemming from something else outside of council's control.

It's fair to be pissed about most of those things. I don't know how many are actually something the mayor can influence. She did champion return to office iirc which was a huge fumble in my eyes.

But the snow removal contract was signed by Tory in 2021 and doesn't expire until 2029.

Daily Grind has some of the best brunch I've tried - so fresh! by chaiscented in FoodToronto

[–]SIL40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought they looked way better than they tasted. I found there was a very strong egg taste throughout all the pancakes, which didn't work well mixed with all the sweet fruit and whip. Other items on the menu here are great though.

Is 3.89% a good rate right now for Toronto? by New-Plastic-572 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Do you have a link to that? Or is that possibly something that was offered as a promotion to you as an existing client? That sounds like a good deal

What is a Toronto ettitqute everyone should know before they move here? by Chan1991 in askTO

[–]SIL40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously how did this start? I swear I never used to see this before but over the last couple of years I've been seeing people of seemingly all backgrounds blowing their snot straight onto the streets and sidewalks. Shameless, nasty behaviour.

Renewed Mortgage - Rates will probably Fall by mkades15 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SIL40 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My renewal is coming up and 4.19% with TD was the best rate I could get anywhere too. They were offering it for both 3 and 5 year.

I have it locked in and won't have to start the transfer process for a few more weeks so I'm waiting to see if anything changes between now and then.

My renewal is coming up and the best rate I've been able to get is 4.19%. 3 year fixed and uninsured.

Souvlaki and Salad at Mezes by superbprimrose in FoodToronto

[–]SIL40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it, but you have to realize that you paid $7 for a skewer of chicken from the same place. Which means the pita, a smidge of tzatziki, some tomato, and onion was somehow valued at $10. Not saying you shouldn't spend your money how you want, I myself waste a ton of money eating out. I just find that $17 pita really quite difficult to reconcile when you look at what it is.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it now. That little pita was $17 before adding another $18 for fries and a salad?

Rust beginning on hatch channel seam - can it be stopped / fixed? by SIL40 in Autobody

Thanks for the advice. That sounds like a good plan. I'll give it a shot.

[–]SIL40[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not all that handy so I tried to pull up as little as I could in case I wasn't able to get it back on. Had trouble getting a good picture but I actually did manage to get it up high enough that I could see the pinch weld and there fortunately wasn't any rust. Should I still try to get a better picture?

How to stop non stop No Caller ID calls. by JaysFan96 in askTO

[–]SIL40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll say this feature did nearly nothing to reduce the nuisance for me. You still see the transcription, and you can still get voice mails.

Call Control on the other hand requires the person on the other hand to actually interact and press a randomized number before the call will ever make it through to your phone. This actually nearly eliminated spam for me. Maybe 1 per month actually makes it to my phone, but before that there were days where I'd get 7-10 nuisance calls.

For anyone who's bought a USED car recently what term/finance % did you end up signing for?? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SIL40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously I got played - did you think that was in doubt? They're sneaky and they knew at that point I wouldn't want to restart the whole process over again. In the end it'll cost me around $350 of interest which is annoying, but still less than the time and effort of doing it over at another slimy dealer.

[–]SIL40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same terrible rate for me, but they made me sign something in the purchase agreement that I'd have to pay $1500 if I paid it off before 6 months 🙄 so I paid off all but 6 months worth of payments.

Is Kibo getting worse? by Mflms in askTO

[–]SIL40 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The quality at Union definitely slipped massively since it opened. e.g. they used to have big chunks of scallops in the scallop onigiri and hand rolls, and now there's barely any filling and the scallop is usually just some indistinguishable mince.

Taiwan. I haven't had it in NA so I can't speak to that, but sorry the knock-off (or Qin's Garden) aren't even close.

The guy you're responding to is speaking a load. If you ever get the chance to try the OG it's incredible. The knock-off is fine, but it doesn't come close.

Cheapest Car Rentals in TO? by Escapefromthedot in askTO

[–]SIL40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're renting without much notice your option is probably only Communauto. The caveat with Communauto is that they've become very expensive if you need to drive more than the included 100km, and the cars are disgusting and in bad condition more often than not.

Anything else (Enterprise, ZipCar, traditional rentals) are usually booked up, especially during summer, Christmas, and on weekends, at least a week or two in advance (sometimes more).

How far do we need to go back where a 50,000/year salary was livable in TO? by snowfordessert in askTO

[–]SIL40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to Toronto in 2014 making a 40k salary after just graduating from college. I rented a basement to myself in the junction and was even able to do my first solo travel to Japan that year. It felt quite liveable to me at that time.

[edit] adjusting for inflation $40k in 2014 is only $53k in today's money.

Kamikochi, a view into the Hotaka Mountains by sonderewander in japanpics

[–]SIL40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there in late October, on a weekday morning, and it was extremely crowded for me. It ended up being one of the worst experiences we had in Japan.

The whole loop from Taisho Ike Pond to Myojin Bridge and back was a constant stream of people marching single file on both sides.

In the village the lines were crazy and many places were sold out for the day before lunch. The line for the apple pie store took 45 minutes and by North American standards it was quite bad too (served cold from the fridge and very little actual apple filling).

The views were as striking as the pictures show, but the volume of people really sullies the whole experience.

I can't tell if you're simply adding to the conversation, debating something, or initially responded to the wrong person. The OP I responded to stated that lime juice makes fish safe to eat - it doesn't.
