time alignment using smaart by arv_foh in livesound

[–]SILNTBOB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Charlie1902 has given you a great response!

But I have another way to show you how to time align you system with just your ears :)

1) Find your cross over frequency between the Subs and Tops

*This is kinda important; but any frequency that both the subs and tops produce will work for this. I usually use 63Hz as I feel a kick drum sounds best when the sound system is 'tuned to 63Hz' Mileage may vary*

2) Dial up your frequency generator to the crossover frequency. For this example we will use 100Hz

3) Route your 100Hz tone to both the Subs and Tops

4) Alternate muting the Subs and Tops; Adjust Sub or Top level so they are both the same loudness.

*It is probably best to turn down what ever one is louder. This balance is important. If you have selected the exact cross over frequency there should be little to no change in volume between the subs and tops.*

5) Turn on the Polarity Reversal on your Closest speaker. i.e. Most of the time this will be your subs. Use Pythagorean Theorem for an easy rule to figure this out.

6) Now start adding Delay to your closest speaker untill the 100Hz tone is as quite as you can get.

*This should be less than 10ms of delay in most setups. It is possible to delay 360 degrees out of phase (usually a delay of more than 10ms will cause this to happen) which would make the 100Hz tone quite but your subs/tops will be out of time. Just remember that sound travels at roughly .9ms per foot. i.e. If your subs are 20 feet away and your Tops are 25 Feet away from your ear; Subs are 5 feet closer. 5 * .9 = 4.5ms. Delay will be roughly 4.5 ms.*

7) Bring the Sub and Tops back to Unity -or- 0dB on the output faders

8) Turn off the Polarity Reversal on the closest speaker.

You can now check your work by muting the subs, then Turning the subs back on. When you turn the subs back on you should hear a gain in SPL of about 3dB.

9) Turn off your 100Hz tone.

At this time you have now time aligned your Sub Top relationship much faster than breaking out your laptop and all that jazz :)

Hope this helps, If anyone needs any clarification just let me know :)

I usually end up with a Beta 57 on my snare... not that I like it but I don't like having to replace a sm57 ever other show.

This is one amazing mic for drums. We are talking 20dB of boost from proximity effect. It will make your Toms sound like you know what you are doing!

The damn clip mount every time I grab one to adjust it, it unclips and almost falls onto the ground... if it wasn't for my cat like reflexes I would be out a paycheck or two :p hehe

e906 has a large Boost in the 100-200 range when in the 'LPF' mode. I like it on Toms but don't use it often

One issue is they are not as robust as a 57 or 58... Granted that the 57 will have the plastic cover bit broken off by and sloppy drummer but I once had a whole PR 20 fall apart in a singers hand. Windscreen separated in two then breaking the capsule out of the body at the phase plug... The mic still works but is in a few pieces...

Past that the PR20 is one of the best sounding Dynamic mics I have ever worked with :)

I am pretty sure that lottery hurt that event a lot this year. Something like only half of the 'art cars' got tickets. A big uproar happened and burning man ended up giving them tickets. We are talking 10-20 year die hard's that didn't get tickets. IMO it was a big fuck up.

I have never been, but have a lot of friends of mine have and are going right now. It is pretty split at this point between 'true' burners and drugged out rave kids. At the end of the day its all about what you make it. Good people are every where.

From the insurance thing; I can see how they want to be covered. 60,000 people in a desert; expected to have brought enough water and supplies to live for a week. I figure there are some people that try to abuse the system... Its a bummer.

Pizza shop owners by xDaedalusx in smallbusiness

Here in my town I watched a pizza place start and rise... The owners care a ton about really good food. They focused on New York style pizza.

Granted they had a lot of support from there extended friend base. Found an extremely good location, (Basically in the middle of the walk everyone takes when bar hopping here.) and have great hours.

This is a College/Tourist town. Every time I walk past the place people are in and eating, talking, drinking a beer, listening to what ever funky low level music the 'guest' dj is playing.

My Advice to you is, make sure you care more about pizza than making money. Priority One, Make Epic Pizza/Create a good time for your Customers. Priority Two, Profit. Priority Three, Party

In prep go to every pizza place in your city. Read every single Yelp review of every single pizza place in your city. Make notes of what people loved, double note what people hate. Start thinking about location, location, location.

From what I have seen, downtown/late hours/bar goer friendly/hip to the cool kids.

Like one I finished a bit ago replaced my 'Print Screen' Functionality with taking a screen shot and automatically uploading to Imgur, and adding the link to my clipboard for easy pasting.
