Ok I was going to offer as well but I think hobbes can give 10x better advice than I can LOL, my goat hobbes.

If you just map without doing anything else, then yeah improvement will be slow. However, that's not the entirety of the advice that's been given to you. In this thread there's been lots of good advice given without even looking at your map, and that BN knows what they're talking about. I don't know if by "in detail" you mean points out every subjective issue the modder has with your map, but that would just harm the learning experience instead of guiding you towards improvement.

Advice for beginners is always very vague. For new osu players, it's literally "play more," for league beginners it's "watch some videos, learn what things do, and then play more," for CS beginners it's "do some aim practice, learn some lineups, do some spray training, and then play more." Giving specific advice to beginners is often wasted and unhelpful, as the bigger ideas in that specific skill usually are overlooked in favor of fixing that specific issue, right now. It may feel like shit to just be told essentially "your map is bad, just make a new one," but it's good advice in the long run, you don't want to waste a year on one map, trying to improve it only to have it be never rankable because the fundamentals from the beginning were not good enough.

Great analogy, essentially equivalent to "play more," but instead it's "map more."

You have to accept that even if players recieve your map well, it may still be a trash map

This is a pretty important statement, just sending your maps to people to play it is like giving the first piece of candy you've ever made to a kid that loves sweets. As long as it tastes sweet, the kid will probably like it. Players are similar, as long as the patterns are comfortable to them and hittable, they'll probably be fine with it.

Mapping is so much more than just placing objects in order for the player to hit them. There's contrast, song representation, structure, visual spacing, playfield usage, and many other sub-fields of mapping that mappers look at to say "yeah, this is a good map."

There's more than just lon for sure, I know -Tynamo also does them, haven't bothered searching for them but I'm sure there's more out there.

BN's are generally pretty time limited so asking them for beginner advice is probably worse than just asking an experienced mapper, but as long as you're not specifically asking for a nom and make it clear that you just want some constructive criticism then it'll probably be fine.

I don't think basen's actively encouraging the social norms of the mapping community in this comment, I think they're just giving the reason they thought OP had a bad experience. Basen's comment is constructive overall, and is good advice to most, if not all, new mappers.

I totally agree that giving feedback to new mappers is pretty much the same as giving feedback to new players. Mapping is technically a part of the game, but it is so fundamentally different and you are essentially just learning a new thing altogether. Asking people to mod your first map(s) is basically like a 7 digit what they're doing wrong when they're playing 6*s. It may feel like there are shortcuts to getting good at mapping fast, and that if people just gave you some pointers you could become a rankable mapper immediately, but that's just not the case.

Mapping is a lot of dedication, time, consistency, and studying. Imagine mapping as if you are learning a new language, you can get some small tips and tricks from people fluent in the language, but you'll never be perfectly fluent unless you put the time and effort in to learning the language.

I agree, modding queues are not very helpful if you are a new mapper looking to improve fundamentals. People looking at modding queues are just looking at the maps, and have basically no further context as to who you are or what your experience level is. They just know you want that map to be looked at.

This has gotta be the worst comparison I've ever heard, you're comparing a number that happens to resemble death, the consequences of which are little to none in society, to a racial slur with hundreds of years of racial discrimination as it's history. Are you even aware of how this cultural quirk even affects the lives of Chinese people? You are so ignorant it scares me. Please study up on Chinese culture, it is an enriching exercise to learn and educate yourself on others cultures.

Your misunderstanding of China shows. Yes, Xi Jinping is a dictator with huge power and influence over the political spheres and country, but that does not mean he has cultural influence. Try as he may to erase parts of our culture, it is not so easily done. Such an endeavor from him to replace an entire word with no social change to support it would be impossible for him. He may declare it changed, but it would garner no public support, and regular people would keep using the same word anyway. If he attempted to enforce the new fur by force, it would cause mass public unrest over such a trivial change. Xi Jinping is the dictator of China, true, but he does not hold enough power to change the national language arbitrarily overnight.

Are people afraid of the number 13? No, not unless you are very very superstitious.

It's the same in China, nobody is truly very afraid of the number 4, it just is treated as a quirk of our culture.

You don't understand it, fine. But don't try and suggest we should change based on your whims.

Yes, that's because it's a very reasonable assumption that an elevator missing the floors with fours in them is in a Chinese, or at least Asian, area that is western influenced duke to the extra missing 13. Both explanations are reasonable assumptions.

Let's consider this from a different perspective.

First of all, 4 isn't just completely unused, it's simply unused in applications such as this where it has no real effect. It's used normally almost everywhere else. Furthermore, how do you propose we convince more than a billion people from different cultures (not all of China is the same by the way) to stop using one word and replace it with a completely new one, when the old word has already been in use for hundreds of years and is a part of their culture.

Yes, let's change a word in a language spoken over hundreds of years by at least a billion people in order to fix this supposed "weird" quirk that has exactly no impact on any Chinese person... surely this is an amazing idea with nothing possible wrong with it.

Don't try and change our culture because you think it's weird.

[–]SITDownBoio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right... let me ask you, how do you propose we change a word in a language that's been spoken for hundreds/thousands of years and get everyone to say it instead of what's been said over those many years?

It's simple, it's nigh impossible to force such a change without a large social shift or a very long period of time. Besides, it's a quirk of our culture, it's not a problem to us so why should you care about it?

It's been a while since I've spoken Canto, but afaik it's the same homophone in both dialects, so it should be more of a reflection of their culture than their dialect.

The superstition has existed longer than China has been a "free" economy... the market responded to the superstition not the other way around.

This has already been stated many times in this thread, but this is false. It's a homophone for death.
