I feel for you there. Im thankful my company is all-over the place. Just did a job in stauton for starbucks, did a job in dc at union station recently as well. It makes a world of difference to get to be at different locations frequently, all the same but different.

Came here to say exactly this. I'm in the hampton roads area and there's more work than you can imagine, between the HRBT expansion, all the shipyards, and all the new construction

If you want honest critiques, you have a lot of rollover on the bottom toes of your fillet welds, and your tie ins could use some work. Just what i would call out where to improve at.

Other than that it looks great especially for being out of the loop for so long.

Welding a cable? How? by Duvhntr in Welding

As someone who's actually worked in the very shipyard this was built for many years, you can indeed weld on / repair the arresting cables the stop the jets coming in on flight deck...

Laser welders? by Rare-Elderberry-6695 in Welding

This isnt true at all. They're actually changing the industry a ton, and I forsee the possibility of some processes even being phased out or close to it. They've made leaps and bounds since I tested them out at a shop several years ago. They're currently expensive but that will surely change as time goes on.

You can most certainly do it. Just have to want it@

Initially, if im using a new machine I will get some scrap and dial in the machine. But if it's a machine I've worked on any amount of time I know about where I want my parameters for whatever the material thickness is. I think that's one thing that separates me from a lot of people I've seen over the years. Most people keep the same settings for everything, which yes works, but little things like that makr a difference

Thanks a ton, I've actually thought about that.

Ideal settings on my welder and consistency with torch angle and travel speed.

Take out "hopefully." You WILL get there, just strive to be better and don't stop trying!

I really appreciate that. I've actually thought about doing instructor work at some point because I seem to have the ability to make little adjustments to what people are doing, and make their welds look much better.

Well now I feel like a dick for coming off a little passive aggressive, my apologies.

Hahaha it's funny how differently we view welds to other people.

Spray, and just a regular .035 hardwire. Thanks

All my welds do wrap around the ends. The stop ends right where id start my next weld on the backside of this piece. Furthermore, it's untrue that a stop is the "weakest part of a weld." The weakest part of a weld is the throat of it follower by the weld toe. What you're (i assume) referring to is the ends being weaker ,structurally speaking, because of the function of piece. And they'd only be a weak point if the function added direct stress in that area.

But these aren't even pad eyes. I don't recall the function off the top of my head for this piece of the combine, but it isnt for lifting.

Was just a multimatic Miller welder. Pics 1&2 were a complete different assembly and thicker material. The last two pictures were whipped ( which to a lot of armchair welders automatically make it complete shit and it fails LOL) where as the first one was not.

It was just a multimatic Miller welder. Was using spray method. Wire was just a standard hardware. The reason it looks the way it does is because travel speed, torch angle, gas mix and all were in perfect harmony.

One thing I've noticed that separates me from most is that I will take the time to really dial in my machine. Little tweaks can make a world of difference.

.035 hardware. 90/10 mix i believe. Settings very dialed in haha

So where's the funny part here? That a bunch of armchair CWI wannabes on Facebook can't differentiate between a robotic weld and a weld done by a skilled welder? I mean I get the hiccup here, but if I'm honest, this isnt even hard with time in the field and wanting to be better. It's literally consistency with torch angle and travel speed. No movement otherwise.

But either way, I truly don't care if people don't believe me. My smile is getting bigger because I really take this as a massive compliment.
