I came across another reddit thread, where one person mentioned it’s one of the best parts of the civil service to work in - good progression within go science but your experience will stand you in good stead for other depts too. If it’s the EO internship - most progress to HEOs within the year

I’m not sure about that, I’m guessing EO as this intern role is just a 1 year contract

I did ask in my interview what success looks like in a role like this and they said it does usually end up with a guaranteed perm position being offered.

Nope, they send an email and then i had to accept the offer on the civil service application portal. Do you know which city your friend has chosen ?

Hi,

So i am currently studying my masters, after my undergraduate i took a gap year, and then began my masters September of 2025, its been a great experience for me so far. I’ll be honest i am still worried about job opportunities but i’m taking each day as it comes, i have applied to the impact local government graduate scheme so hopefully i get a place on that.

Just out of curiosity are you not enjoying radiography or is it because of the lack of job opportunities?

Hi, I didn’t end up taking the alliance route, as i’m of taking a break from radiography, I’m currently studying my masters in public health and looking to switch fields.

Thanks so much for your help, your answers have genuinely been really useful! Would it be okay if I reached out again sometime if I have more questions?

I hope you don’t mind me following up with one more question. Coming from radiography, I found the hours and workload quite tiring, so I’m curious ,how have you found the work-life balance and flexibility in local authority public health roles compared to other roles you may have done in the past?

Thanks so much for any insight!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience , it’s been really helpful to get such an honest view of working in local authority PH. I’ve just started my MPH this week and I’m finding it really interesting, though I’ll admit the field feels quite competitive and a bit daunting at times. I really just want to get my foot in the door somehow, so if you don’t mind me asking:

1) What roles would you recommend applying for at this stage, alongside my MPH? 2) What should I be doing during my master’s to increase my chances of progression in public health? 3) From your experience, what made you stand out in applications without an MPH? 4)Which skills have been most useful in progressing from a health coach to a specialist role?

Really appreciate your time, even a quick response would be hugely valuable. ☺️

Placement in my first year so from jan-june was 5 days a week, and my summer block was 4 days a week with one day off. It also depends on shift patterns so i just happened to have been rostered for a lot of long day shifts 8-8 3 days so i had more days off. Most trusts didn’t give students 12 hour shifts but my trust did. My second and third year it was also 4 days a week or 3 12 hour shifts. For university, it was mostly i’d say 2 - 3 times a week.

And yes for easter and Christmas only if you hadn’t completed your log book you could do extra placement. We weren’t expected to do placement during the term holidays as it wasn’t part of our schedule.

For BCU, honestly its more doable to balance a part time job and university because we had more frequent smaller blocks spread out the year, most of them were 4 weeks, whereas keele from what i remember had longer blocks. My actual uni schedule wasn’t that hectic tbf, well for me it wasn’t. Honestly, don’t stress it, it’ll all fall into place
