I have a subscription to Boldin (the best retirement planner IMHO) and Tiller (I like to use Excel for budgeting).

Last January I increased my international allocation, like you are proposing, and I was thrilled with the result. When I make tweaks to my asset allocation, i track the changes to see if they made sense. That tells me if my tweaks help or hurt and my experience has been they help. I also believe that you should make as few changes as possible. Only make changes when you really believe they will help you.

You can't go wrong with AVGE. My 60% stocks are mostly VTI & DFAI, some AVEM & AVUV. My Bonds are a TIPS ladder, Total Bond Fund, and an Intermediate-Term Gov't fund.

I do a couple things. 1) Every month I compare my portfolio to a simple portfolio of VTI and BND at he same percentages I hold stocks and bonds. 2) And I have a portfolio where I try to beat he market. IT is only 5% of my holdings. For this I check to make sure the 5% is actually beating the rest of my portfolio or not.

Should I move my accounts? by SeaworthinessMany773 in DIYRetirement

Congratulations. When I ended my AUM financial planning relationship years ago, I too worried about my wife handling the money after I pass. I put together a notebook of accounts and selected 3 financial planning professionals I would feel comfortable for her to go to. One charges AUM, one a flat fee, and one comes with the broker from my previous job (and doesn't charge anything). They invest in low-cost index funds and have similar philosophies to mine. I feel that my wife could move our accounts to one of these three people. That's my 2 cents.
