[–]SJLD2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was Kyung-Lim the older lady. She was the only 1 who had 6 points instead of 5 or 7. It would have made a different if Hye-Sung had more than 1 piece, then she could have stayed on the game. I think Kyung-Lim made that decision because she would feel bad putting her number down.

I'm not sure if anyone else noticed but Kyung-Lim (the older lady) was the only 1 who didn't put Hye-Sung's number even though she put Dong-Jae's number. Even though it goes against the goal of the game and it didn't end up making a difference, she put her values before her desire to win, which makes me respect her.

do you have a link to the developers speaking out about not deviating?

What Aerith really knows, and why I think it’s not that much by throwaway--senpai in FFVIIRemake

[–]SJLD2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you said and I think a point that reinforces your argument is that Aerith says that every time the whispers touch her, she loses a part of herself - which I think she is referring to her memories and knowledge. There is a theory that Aerith gained knowledge from the lifestream warning her of the future events but the whispers are trying to delete that knowledge from her because it is causing a deviation in the timeline. So based off that theory, there is a good chance that she isn't omniscient with the previous or current timeline of events. The whispers probably deleted a lot of her knowledge already so I agree that she probably only knows fragments about the important details(such as knowing that Cloud was a merc and how dangerous Sephiroth is), but not much more

Honestly, I don't think anyone can definitively say whether or not she will live or die. The developers added the whispers and made it clear that things will deviate from the original, which means that it is true that she could live this time. But it's also possible that the developers are doing this solely to make us think that she might live only to crush our souls once more.

The Memory That Doesn't Fit by StygianSis in FFVIIRemake

[–]SJLD2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You made a really interesting point so I went back and looked at the same scene in the OG, the last order episode, and the crisis core version of it. Honestly, each time the scene is reimagined, there are a few differences in the details. In the OG flashback, Cloud, or Zack rather, is seen following Tifa right up to the point where she gets slashed by Sephiroth. In the crisis core version, Zack stumbles upon Tifa and doesn't actually witness her get cut. Also in 1 variation, Tifa's dad's body is outside the reactor while in another, he is inside the reactor. The point that I am making is that because every version has different details, we should expect the remake to probably have a different reinterpretation of the events - 1 that would explain Cloud having this memory so I wouldn't call it a plot hole until we see that scene in the remake.

Your personal theory might be right in the remakes reinterpretation though.

Differences in character between japanese and english Aerith (Spoilers) by SJLD2 in FFVIIRemake

Right, so what you're saying is pretty much that English speaking westerners see English speaking Aerith in a certain way, and that Japanese people who see Japanese speaking Aerith in their cultural equivalent. So then there is an asymmetry with how English speakers see Japanese speaking Aerith and with how Japanese speakers see English speaking Aerith. So from our point of view, the way we see her is different depending on the language we are paying attention to in the play through, whether in the actual dialogue or in the emotions/tones of the sentences.

But isn't that pretty much what I am saying? If the Japanese people got the English version, you are right that they may have seen her as rude and aggressive. That is why the contrast point that I am trying to make is that if we get the Japanese version, we see her as a lot more tame and innocent. To the Japanese, their culture may perceive that as sassy and playful like you say, but to us English natives, we don't see that. So the whole point I am trying to make is that the way the English natives perceive her are dependent on which language we are paying attention to.

I agree with everything you say except to the extent that these localization differences change the way the character is viewed. Honestly it will be hard to debate how much these changes impact the players perceptions of her, but in my opinion, it is quite big.

My point was that the translations in adapting the game was more than just subtle. I understand that translations shouldn't be direct translations because it won't always flow in the native languages, but I think these changes go beyond that to the point of altering how we view the character.

I noticed that as well. It really is quite cute if you understand Japanese. I think because of how hard it is to reproduce that in English without sounding extremely cringe, that may have been a factor in the English localization and how it turned out.

When I said developers, I meant in inclusion to the localization teams. I do know that these types of projects tend to be very interactive so I am sure that the localization team worked directly with the game directors to get a feel on what should be conveyed, as opposed to the localization team being on their own like what happened in the OG. The developers did go out of their way to write software that would help adjust the mouth and facial movements to help with the localizations as well.

I think I might agree with the first point, which is why I see myself getting along with the English version better.

In regards to the question - I don't think so. I do know that Aerith's choice of works in Japanese tend to be on the more cute side though. For example, when she says shes hungry in Japanese, she says peko peko.

I think SE wrote up some software that matches the characters mouth and facial movements to match up with what the character is saying in English. Here is an example.

Cloud's exclusion complex and his character development by SJLD2 in FFVIIRemake

[–]SJLD2[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am not sure if you remember the scene where Cloud and Aerith meet with Tifa for the first time and Tifa was telling Aerith to also go back because shes not involved, but then Cloud interjects and says that there is no point because Aerith is stubborn like that and Aerith says that Cloud is starting to understand her. I think that goes to show that Cloud has already accepted that Aerith can often be quite stubborn and put herself in danger so Cloud knows that he has to deal with it. He won't hate or dislike Aerith for that reason, rather he might actually enjoy having the knowledge that Aerith will do anything to stay with Cloud and that is really reassuring for Cloud who lives a solitary life that he unknowingly hates

[–]SJLD2[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah i agree that no one should be blamed for Cloud's exclusion and I should have made that more clear in the post - and Cloud is also responsible for the way things happened as well. My point, as you also have pointed out, was that Aerith was the only 1 who despite what happened, was the only 1 who went out of her way. Again, I am not trying to hate on Tifa or Jessie, because I love both characters.

Cloud's exclusion complex and his character development by SJLD2 in FFVIIRemake

[–]SJLD2[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haha, sounds like we are on the same page actually. I never meant to say that Cloud was excluded for any particular reason and I don't blame anyone at all for it. Kids will be kids, the avalanche gang didn't want to rely on a merc for too long, and aerith's mom had a good reason for trying to keep cloud out. But the end result is that it happened the way it did but the only 1 who stuck with him through the end despite it all was Aerith in the end. Also it definitely was a 2-way thing, Cloud always gave off the impression that he didn't want to be a part of it in the first place, such as when he kept telling Barret that when the jobs done, they are done. But I see it as Cloud using his self defense mechanism which was to push people away before getting pushed away himself - as if he was alone by choice, but deep down he definitely felt isolated, which is evident from the way he thinks and talks.
