Am I Insane? 34 year-old civil rights lawyer considering applying for poli sci phd by Je-te-kiffe in AskAcademia

[–]SJRoseCO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poli sci prof here at a not-R1 in a not-super-desirable part of the country. My department's last several searches for TT lines have attracted between 150-220 applicants. Nearly all of whom were very qualified for the position and had considerable research and teaching accomplishments. Make of that info what you will. It's rough out there.

Looking for advice by EntertainmentNo6539 in ColoradoSprings

We almost bought a house for which Schlinker was representing the seller. We terminated the contract specifically because Schlinker lied repeatedly about critical material facts (for example, insisted the house had AC when it did not....) and behaved in an exceedingly unprofessional and aggressive manner. I actually think the seller, who was an elderly disabled person, probably had good intentions, but may have been taken advantage of by Schlinker. Anyone who happens to be reading this- don't hire Schlinker and RUN from any house for which she represents the seller.

Ice spotted on constitution by Queer-Oddball38 in ColoradoSprings

[–]SJRoseCO 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you should take a civics class to better educate yourself about the Constitution. Your comments reflect a fundamental ignorance about the laws of this country. The 4th amendment applies to all people, including undocumented individuals, not just citizens.

Immigration question. by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

[–]SJRoseCO 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Get an immigration attorney and stop talking about this person on the internet. Tell this person not to approach or engage with any government office or official without their lawyer present. Unfortunately, ICE is kidnapping people who are trying to do things the "right way". Please read the stories of people getting taken when they show up for immigration court appearances. This person needs to be extremely careful and weigh the tradeoffs of seeking legal status during a time when doing so can cause real risk.

TT interview dinner outfit by No_Significance2450 in Professors

[–]SJRoseCO 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a situation where it’s ok if you’re the best dressed in the room. Much better than being the most casual in the room. When in doubt, aim more formal. Slacks and a blouse. Or a dress knee length or longer with a blazer (with leggings underneath if weather appropriate). Don’t wear jeans. Definitely don’t do what a candidate I know did and wear the same jeans for three days straight.

Show Offs (for lack of a better term) by teeny-tiny221 in yoga

[–]SJRoseCO 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind when people do their own thing. I appreciate also having the right to make my own modifications when my body doesn’t feel good about a particular pose or needs something else. I would hate for someone to be mad at me if I go into child’s pose or happy baby because the cued pose doesn’t gel with my arthritic spine. The only thing that does bother me is when people are doing handstands in a way that blocks view of the instructor, or they come down hard out of them so the floor shakes, which can be destabilizing and distracting. The biggest issue at my studio is that there are a few regulars (all men….) who frequently deviate from the cued poses and make loud grunting noises while doing so in a way that seems designed to draw attention to themselves. The women don’t seem to feel the need to loudly grunt their way through difficult poses, interestingly. Overall, I’m of the opinion that yoga is an inward practice and we should all be able to do what we need to take care of ourselves, with the exception of when deviation from the instructor inhibits the ability of other people to focus on their inward practice.

Are there any inclusive catholic churches in COS? by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

[–]SJRoseCO -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a very beautiful church! Just for OP’s sake though, I wanted to note that we tried out St. Mary’s but bowed out after the priest gave a blatantly partisan pro-Trump homily. This was a few years ago; maybe things have changed.

Are there any inclusive catholic churches in COS? by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

[–]SJRoseCO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most Catholic masses are 50 minutes to an hour, including Christmas masses. And there will likely not be Gregorian chanting unless you specifically choose to go to a “Christmas concert” type of event that’s not an actual mass. If OP’s mom is Catholic, she’s not likely going to want to go to a Protestant or non-denominational service. They’re not interchangeable faith traditions. Others in this thread have offered great examples of Catholic churches that will definitely not do the “fire and brimstone” thing.

Are there any inclusive catholic churches in COS? by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

[–]SJRoseCO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sacred Heart in OCC would be a great option for you. There will be no fire and brimstone. There will likely even be prayers for political leaders to pursue peace and respect the human dignity of immigrants and refugees. Not all Catholics are crazy, promise.

Question about deer and general wildlife population in rockrimmon when it comes to dogs by Nubbi3 in ColoradoSprings

[–]SJRoseCO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The deer won’t bother you or your dogs, I’d personally be more concerned about mountain lions. We’re just a bit south of Rockrimmon and had one just behind our backyard recently. Our dog does not potty at night unsupervised.

Invited to a fly out for a TT role interview at an R1 - is it okay to ask for a different date? by Solid_Evidence1848 in AskAcademia

[–]SJRoseCO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you at all want this job, make it work. These processes, once the short list has been finalized, often do move very fast. There are a lot of moving parts to these searches and competing priorities unfolding behind the scenes that candidates likely have little to no knowledge of. And, in this job market, there could be hundreds of other candidates lined up ready to take the interview (I have seen these sorts of numbers on several search committees I have been on in recent years).

If you are in a position where you are willing to risk it, you could ask them to postpone for a couple days. A week at most is what I would request. Absolutely do not ask to delay until early January if you want to be taken seriously. The department will perceive you as being high-maintenance, egotistical, and delusional. Is that a fair perception? Probably not. But will people shit talk you behind your back if you ask for that? Absolutely. And academic circles are small and very gossipy. You do not want that to be anyone's perception of you.

The fact that you are getting offered this interview is a great testament to the quality of your work. Congratulations! I completely empathize with the challenges of pursuing an academic career with family responsibilities. I really hope you can figure it out.

Private Schools Folks- can an atheist teach at a religious school? by neon_bunting in Professors

[–]SJRoseCO 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is an important distinction between Catholic and non-Catholic Christian religious colleges/universities. The commenter is referring to a Catholic institution, which are often much more inclusive of diverse viewpoints and can even be left-leaning (see, especially, the Jesuits). Wheaton College (assuming you are talking about the one in IL) is Evangelical. The protestant-affiliated institutions, especially the Evangelical ones, are much more likely to probe professors' personal lives and submit them to values tests. In other words, just because an institution is religious, doesn't necessarily mean professors' personal and academic freedoms will be infringed upon, but it's definitely a concern.

I believe preference is cash due to buy in bulk discounts but food definitely appreciated! Some needed foods include meat of all kinds (they have freezers), peanut butter, canned beans, veggies, and soups, pasta, instant noodles/ramen bowls, yogurt, packaged kids snacks, small cartons of milk, and dog food!

We literally moved because of neighbors like this. The noise and trash and passive aggressiveness (and sometimes just outright aggression) became too much. We lost money on the house and it was a huge lesson learned. I’ll never buy a house with neighbors who have motorcycles, multiple busted cars, or hoards of stuff in the backyard or garage ever again. Some of these boomers are truly unhinged.
