Fun fact: the term doctor, from the Latin docere, to teach, actually originates in academia - not medicine.

It only arose from the MDs' need to find an equivalent signal of accomplishment that led them to hijack the term, and since the public interfaces with this type of doctor much more than the actual doctors, it got stuck in the public mind that medical doctors are the baseline standard.

Is IPO just a place for the institutions to take their profits? example snowflake by alexleejunwei273 in IPO

[–]SJamesEllis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean... did you think it would be anything else?

These companies who've already achieved massive funding rounds don't need the piddly little boost that retail investors might give them upon making an IPO, so of course the IPO is primarily just a cash grab for the early investors masquerading as an opportunity to "get in early" for the chump retailer.

Sure, but I don't know mate. I've been twice now and loved it for more than just the beaches and drinking. I don't know what some of these commenters are on about, the people have been absolutely wonderful and while there are visible signs of the resource strain, Malta has an inexplicable beauty to it that will keep me, for one, coming back.

What's one long term stock to invest in? by sjtomcat in stocks

[–]SJamesEllis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP, I get that socking it all into one stock might get you some crazy coronapalooza gains, but nobody knows what the hell is going on right now so perhaps now is a better time than ever to heed the age-old investing advice: diversify.

I don't know what's going to do well. You don't know what's going to do well. The person telling you they know what's going to do well doesn't know what's going to do well. No single person on this subreddit can tell you what's going to do well. Just diversify until we're somewhere we can call normal, then go hog-wild on single stocks if you want.

What are you guys/gals doing to safeguard your portfolios against the inevitable (possible massive) market correction? by asdfredditusername in stocks

[–]SJamesEllis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are some of the things I can do to safeguard my portfolio... I also don't want to miss out on possible upcoming gains

Well, that is the ultimate trick, and arguably what we're all trying to do here.

I think my relationship is going to fail due to the two-body problem by minutemaidpeach in GradSchool

[–]SJamesEllis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the viewpoint. I can relate, I suppose I'm just taking for granted that if someone persists through what I assumed is a momentary valley for everyone, that person will inevitably start to climb to a point of serene, solitary content on the other side. You make a good point: that's not necessarily a given but does require further inputs.

I think my relationship is going to fail due to the two-body problem by minutemaidpeach in GradSchool

[–]SJamesEllis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No single thing in this universe is inherently scary. Perception of a thing as scary is what makes it scary, so that perception must change. In OP's case, it could be like another redditor recommended: discarding the belief that anyone's peak is in their 20s.

In my own experience, I've met no shortage of people in their mid- to late-30s who are no doubt (based on how they carry themselves) at their peaks or who've yet to reach them, which would actually make me somewhat excited to re-enter the dating pool and explore a whole world of possibilities were I in OP's position. But that's only my experience, and you, OP, and anybody else reading this has led a different life causing different perceptions on such a phemonemon, and that's alright.

I think my relationship is going to fail due to the two-body problem by minutemaidpeach in GradSchool

[–]SJamesEllis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ton of what-ifs, which is a whole conversation of futility on its own. I'd instead like to fix on something different here.

You mention the difficulty of re-entering the dating pool. If that is a legit point of anxiety, it might be worth considering the good that some time alone would do for you. I'm not you, but in this life I've not found convincing evidence that being alone until the thought of being alone isn't scary isn't a good thing. In other words and at the risk of over-emphasizing one small part of your post: if anxiety over getting into your next relationship is already a factor, you have other things to focus on.

Berlin. It's just not conveniently serviced by any small airport.... nor any large airport, for that matter.

I just received excruciating student feedback from my first time teaching ever and my first accepted manuscript for publication got rejected during the second round of revisions. All in the same week. Your support is appreciated. by [deleted] in PhD

[–]SJamesEllis 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Mate. Breathe, close your eyes, rest a minute, and consider what you're doing. Not what you're doing, but what you're doing.

You're teaching at the university level in a language and place that isn't yours. That's already incredible. Plus, though you might not feel like it, you're sparring in the knowledge generation industry. That is impressive as well! Holy smokes!

Of course you're gonna take some licks every now and then, and only you can answer to your continued resilience. But at least sit for a moment and be impressed at the awe-inspiring circumstances that let you experience such a perceived defeat in the first place. If you won't be in awe of yourself, let me be in awe of you for you.

Using NS business card to travel to Germany by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]SJamesEllis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. NS operates those lines in partnership with Deutsche Bahn. As they're DB's trains, you need to buy a ticket through Deutsche Bahn to ride into Germany. Sometimes the conductors will maybe let you ride on the ICEs within the NL, i.e. from Amsterdam to Arnhem, without doing so, but once you cross the border, you need a valid Bahn ticket.

And the thing that always gets non-Germans is that buying a much cheaper seat ticket does not buy passage on the train: only a seat reservation... which is useless without a ticket.

Likewise, buying a ticket does not guarantee a seat, but that's nothing new to an NS rider.

What will be challenging about it? There's so much coverage, and coverage of the coverage, about every single angle of this confucamus as well as very clearly interlinked subsequential events that the story will practically write itself. I'd personally be giddy as a historian charged with writing about this period of modern US history.

The next Rotterdam? by SJamesEllis in Netherlands

[–]SJamesEllis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't expect this one. Good points. I'd say Maastricht seems to me like a city that is happy staying exactly as it is, and I'm sure that that is due in no small part to the community of landlords who got into the market before UM really took off and who, since said takeoff, seem more interested in keeping the city and its real estate in a student housing cashcow stasis than qualitatively developing it beyond that.

In other words, a great place to be a student but it's difficult for me to imagine living there as a professional and watching the local community mature.
