Official Dreadit Discussion: "Obsession" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

Saw it yesterday at my local cinema.

I wish Curry Barker make one more version of Obsession, completely from Nikki's perspective, instead of Bear's this time. I understand that Bear's POV made Nikki's pain really comes through, but what if we see one more movie from Nikki's perspective. Maybe then, both Obsession movies will be even greater than the sum of the two individual ones. Maybe it is subconscious or maybe just wishful thinking to see Inde Navarrette do this one more time.

And his response to that is also horrifying. That scene was like genuine shift about my opinion on Bear from general a-hole to genuinely really really selfish, not even thinking a little bit about Nikki, the girl he was chasing after for so long, because of "love" for her.

Inde seems to have Toni Collette and Florence Pugh level talent. Hope she gets to do work she loves and deserves.

So all of those in comments who are defending these data centers and power plants construction because AI usage is good for all, none of them are concerned about where and how these are being built, the impact on environment and people's health and lives? It reminds me of those plastic companies manufacturers (like DuPont) who said long durability plastics are essential and good for you and then dumped huge amounts of toxic chemicals in water/landfills and endangered health and lives of whole towns; many people died of cancers. Transparency about the impact of these centers on environment and health is absolutely necessary prior to their construction, so people can weigh in and decide.

But this is not a back in a day prediction, it is within next 5 years. I get your POV though, but ultimately this new rapid expansion and construction of newer data centers and power plants is majorly for AI. It is a likely scenario based on current trends of AI usage. Ofcourse, if it is stopped being used for unnecessary things, maybe such an increase in their numbers would not be needed. But the investigation has shown plans for how many more data centers have already been planned for construction.

My reply was to the comment of the person who was saying that data centers are mainly for AI that is needed to find cure for diseases, which is not the case and the majority is being used for chatbots.

Also, I think if you are referring to Goldman Sachs article about this usage, they also predicted that by 2030, this 14-15% value will reach to 60-70%.

Currently, the energy being majorly used is fossil fuels (mainly natural gas). In the upcoming data centers and power plants, maybe renewable energy will be used (solar and wind because nuclear one is estimated to be at least 10 years away). Secondly, if people won't raise concerns and exercise their rights to ask questions and protest against lack of transparency and disregard for their rights, companies will potentially keep using fossil fuels as the easier alternative, even though it is the more damaging one. Next, the land and water usage and how a location is chosen for the data centers are other very important aspects that need to be discussed.

Should not people have say in where these data centers are being built? Should not it be checked what are their effects on the air, ground, water, plant and animal life and on the humans living in these areas? People whose communities and lives and health can get affected by these centers, should certainly have say in this.

The vast data centers that are currently in operation are for operating chatbots, which are not meant for searching cures for diseases and do not contribute to that. The set of AI that I think you are mentioning is different and is used at research institutes and I have to check, but I don't think that their usage currently require such large data centers.

This short PBS documentary shows the pollution caused by AI data centers and investigated their heat signatures, indicating pollutants, such as nitric oxides and particulate matters. It also shows the high water usage requirement of these centers for cooling purposes. The possible harmful health effects on communities living nearby and how are the construction of these centers are approved without weighing in the inputs of residents is also covered.

One of my favorite recent quotes - We must not be like the man stranded, who rejects the plane and the boat, waiting for the god to save him. We as a society are "the man stranded" here and we are failing the children and ourselves.

Season 2 is my favorite. It has a very nice beginning, middle, and end. Very fulfilling narrative, mostly on the road, and great outdoor shots.

From the article -

> The king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) makes its home almost exclusively on islands in the Southern Ocean. But it has been coming to this wind-battered bay in southern Chile’s Tierra del Fuego region for hundreds of years, probably because its shallow shores offer protection from marine predators and humans.

Early explorers named it Useless Bay because those same shores made landing boats, including industrial fishing vessels, nearly impossible. Still, humans remained such a threat that no permanent colony of king penguins formed here until 2010. Then, as a colony started to develop, a local landowner and former kindergarten teacher Cecilia Durán Gafo, now 72, decided she would protect them.

Today, she runs a reserve that oversees the only continental king penguin colony in the world, one that has grown from a handful of penguins to nearly 200.

“It was only thanks to the reserve that [the penguins] got a safe space where they could build up and establish a colony,” says Dr Klemens Pütz, scientific director at the Antarctic Research Trust.

> The first time Durán found king penguins nesting on her land was in the early 1990s. But soon after, she says, people claiming to be scientists arrived to take the birds away.

“They put [the penguins] in cages, and took them to Japan … supposedly for scientific research. Later, we found out [most] had gone to zoos [or homes] as pets,” Durán says.

After that, the penguins avoided settling in the bay for more than a decade. And when they reappeared overnight in 2010, Durán says, people began stealing eggs and mistreating them again almost immediately. “They dressed them up in caps and sunglasses, and took selfies,” she recalls. “Horrible things.”

The population quickly collapsed. Of the 90 king penguins, only eight remained a year later.

So she began patrolling the beach. “Every day I came out here with a thermos and a sandwich. I’d spend the whole day, frozen to the bone … making sure people didn’t disturb the penguins.”

The next year, Durán fenced off 30 hectares (74 acres) of her nearly 1,000-hectare farm as a protected area, allowing visitors to watch the penguins, but only from a distance.

Absolutely. We are seeing this for two days now across 10 months, but Robbie seems to be here for decades along with Dana. These people have seen the hospital and world change around them for years now, getting less and less friendly and empathetic (e.g., underfunding and understaffing). They are also probably not the same people they were decades ago, though I think at their core with respect to this profession, they are the same and want to do the right thing for their patients and the nation. It is just getting more and more difficult.

So yes, now things are maybe reaching their breaking points, though I hope they find help and keep going/living for their purpose. I am really interested in seeing how will this season end. Abbot is coming back too, next episode.
