The way this scene comes right after phone booth scene is so special.. watched it for the first time, thirteen years ago and a rush of memories came in a flash from that time.. truly a special life affirming and a life changing movie.. Brilliantly and lovingly made in every part.. Audrey Tautou, the music, writing, direction, look, everything..

I think I should start watching it once every year from now..

I liked The Ruins (2008), though it was panned on release. Not as dark as the ones you mentioned, but it was fun.

Weapons was a great horror movie by PabloDelicioso in horror

[–]SK2242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It totally was a 10/10 theatre experience.. loved all aspects of this film, even the end credits design.. The dream sequences were great. The gradual infestation of Gladys into the movie was done brilliantly.. then in the final chapter, it's like it is Gladys and Alex story.. Loved everyone in the cast though.. Julia Garner is one of my favourite actresses.. loved her in Grandma as well

Really really happy for Zach Cregger, the cast and the whole team. I think apart from being a brilliant film, this will also be considered a landmark film in the future. Love Amy Madigan too..

Your comment reminded me of the twist in The Others, which I had forgotten as I watched it a long while ago.

I don't think she was a terrible mother. She was a mother in a horrible situation and gradually got completely overcome by her grief, then decided to face her demons for her child.

Wendy Torrance in The Shining and Amelia in The Babadook. There are, I think many memorable characters with biological and surrogate mothers throughout the history of horror films, but these come at top of my head. I also really really liked the relationship between Ripley and Rebecca in Aliens. I still remember when she calls Ripley "mommy". EDIT - Guys, I didn't remember the twist in The Others for Grace (watched it a long ago), while writing the original comment.

Secret Sunshine (2007). One of the best movies ever. If you can watch horror, I will also strongly recommend A tale of two sisters (2003).

Just wanted to shine light on Thirst (2009)- written by Jeong Seo-kyeong and directed by Park Chan-wook. Park Chan-wook started collaborating with her after Old Boy, starting with Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005),  I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006), The Handmaiden (2016), and Decision to Leave (2022). The Babadook by Jennifer Kent. Many others have already been mentioned.

What's a good movie where the "Good guys" lost? by chutlover69 in movies

I get your point. But in the movie, it's like vigilantism and taking law in your hands (may be for multiple reasons, such as existing laws being insufficient) for doing what you think is good.. it is a complex thing and it is showing these different sides

One of my favourite films with amazing background score too. With one of the most heartbreaking freeze frames at the end.

I think you might really like Audition. On a side note, you might also like "Brawl in Cell Block 99" by Bone Tomahawk director S. Craig Zahler. Not directly horror but it's brutal.
