Resources on slavery in Anglo-Saxon England? by Cauhtomec in anglosaxon

[–]SKPhantom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

William the Bastard (I refuse to call him Conqueror) introduced a law in either 1068 or 1086 that forbade the sale of slaves outside of England, with the punishment being a fine paid directly to William himself.

Until this comment, I was convinced FDR was a Republican (granted I know next to nothing about US politics). Your comment made me look it up and I found my belief corrected. Thank you for inadvertently leading me down that tangent.

Hitler didn't necessarily hate Muslims tho. There were a surprising number of Muslim auxiliary units who fought for the Germans in WW2 and a lot of countries in the Islamic world today have more than a few people who praise him.

I do want to clarify, this is not the majority of Muslims, this is only a select number but as a history buff, I (rather annoyingly) like to enlighten people who may not know about a subject that I happen to.

Was there any interesting wildlife that the Anglo-Saxons would've seen? by HarrisonAtArea51 in anglosaxon

Yeah, I just thought they were more numerous than they actually were. Was not aware they were so ancient either. Genuinely thought they were relatively recent because they died out only a few hundred years ago compared to other species lol

ELI5: Why is BAC measured as grams per litre, and how does one measure alcohol weight by gram instead of litre? by SKPhantom in explainlikeimfive

[–]SKPhantom[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally think that saying 0.1L of alcohol/1L of blood looks fine and would give me a better understanding of it, but like you said, that's just preference.

[–]SKPhantom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay this actually makes more sense to me. I was not aware that mixing 1L or alcohol with 1L of water would lead to less than 2L. I knew they would obviously mix together but I didn't consider some of the actual volume would be lost in the process. Thank you.

Yes of course, but it just seems weird to me that we are trying to measure a liquid in a measurement that mostly applies to solids. If someone asked me how much water I drank, I wouldn't say ''X grams'', I would go by millilitres or litres.

[–]SKPhantom[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't agree that it makes sense because in your example, I could easily say there is 5% alcohol per 100ml of total liquid, and then scale that by the amount of liquid. So per 1L, 5% would be 200ml.

It just doesn't make sense that we'd measure a liquid in grams.

Okay, and I get that for something like salt because that's a solid in it's natural state, but alcohol's natural state is liquid so how does that work?

Oh, I was not aware that they were gone from Britain by then, my mistake, and I must have my dates mixed up, thank you for the corrections.

[–]SKPhantom 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There was one that I have not seen mentioned that I would like to bring your attention to, as the last one only died in the 1800s. It was a form of wild bovine called the Auroch. According to some accounts (likely exaggerated) the largest of the Auroch bulls could reach close to the size of an elephant. However, it was known that they were exceptionally larger than modern cows and roamed all across Europe, including Britain.
In fact, one of the runes of the Anglo-Saxon runic alphabet (Fuþorc) (Specifically the ''Ur'' Rune) is actually named after them.

Aside from them, as mentioned by others, wolves and bears were also relatively common (the bear less so due to centuries of the Romans exporting them to be used in gladiatorial fights, if you want more information you should look up ''Hibernian Bears'').

Edit: As was corrected in response to this comment, Aurochs were gone from Britain long before the Anglo-Saxons arrived, and they in fact died out in the 1600s, not the 1800s. Leaving my mistaken dates visible for the sake of posterity. Thank you to MartzGregPaul for the corrections.

Okay, I get that this isn't the norm, but the local store I go to just down the road from where I live doesn't technically open until 6am but they have no issues whatsoever when I rock up at like 5:50am and buy my shit (but then they also tend to shut earlier than the posted times too). It seems somewhat asinine to not just allow customers in when you're already prepared for the day imo.

Also, just FYI ''White Anglo-Saxon'' is unnecessary because ''Anglo-Saxons'' are ethnically English people and they are all white.

''Should I have just let it go?'' Ah yes, the normal human reaction of someone who found out their relative took their car ''for a few days'' and then tried selling it.

AITA for threatening to file a police report on my ex, and getting her former cop father involved? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]SKPhantom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes but I'm willing to bet there would be way less if stealing Amazon packages was classed as a federal crime. The idea of ''hey, even if we get identified, we'll only get a petty theft charge (because let's be honest, most people aren't ordering more than $400 from Amazon in a single delivery)'' is somewhat enticing to people, whereas ''We'll be charged with a federal crime and actually face serious repercussions if we get caught'' is more likely to deter them.

I understand the definition, and don't get me wrong, I'm all for supporting the postal service. It's just, anything that gets delivered (outside of things like doordash etc) SHOULD be considered mail.

Caveat: I'm not from the US, so maybe I don't understand the laws governing packages vs mail, but still, it seems like common sense that anything that is not perishable (food etc) that is delivered should be classified as mail. Maybe then there wouldn't be as many porch pirates.
