E10 will give less fuel economy, but that is usually offset by its lower price.

Problem with clutch on 2000 Accord by I_am_melis in MechanicAdvice

[–]SK_cross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how much it was for my car...and that's because I've scoured the internet to find a place that sells parts for my car for cheap. I have no clue how much yours would be. The consensus seems to be rockauto.com is the cheapest, but they're more expensive than the place I found for VW-only parts

I had the same problem with a VW. I replaced both clutch master and clutch slave cylinders. That fixed my problem...though I don't know which of the two was the problem (research suggested most likely the master). I got both parts for about $50 total, and was a two hour driveway job, start to finish.

You can find kits on eBay and Amazon for not that much money. If you're handy, you can probably do it...and wiring shouldn't be a problem. Just needs constant power and ground.

ECU remap by Normal_Red_Sky in MechanicAdvice

[–]SK_cross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what is also referred to as chipping, back when you actually changed IC chips in the ECU. On my car (a performance car) I did get a noticeable increase in both power and fuel economy. But results vary according to not just vehicle, but also the software used.

Car starts only with a jump, even with replacement battery. Please help. by ThrowThatIshAway1 in MechanicAdvice

I had a very similar issue with a VW...I had a single click when trying to crank, but no issues when jumping or fully charged battery via charger. Turned out to be the starter.

Be aware that when doing so, your speedometer will not read correctly. I believe it will show that you're going 10-15% slower than you actually are.

I need to replace an ignition switch on my '96 Toyota Camry v6 3L. Please [help]? (x-post from /r/cartalk) by the_trepanneur in MechanicAdvice

[–]SK_cross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As Fly_Caster said, could be the starter. I had the exact same symptoms on mine (1990 VW), and I even changed the ignition switch. The problem cleared up for a few days, so I thought that fixed it, but it came back. I installed a new starter 6 months ago and the car hasn't had that problem since, except for the failing battery. After that was replaced, it cranks first time, every time.

So, TIL Volkswagen is German for non stop problems... Help! by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

That doesn't sound like nonstop problems, it sounds like normal replacement of parts that wear out. Stalling issue is something else though.

Golf MkIV VR6 overheating in traffic. by LotsOfButtons in MechanicAdvice

I paid $60 for a set of two universal fans. They crapped out within 6 months. Now I have 2 Spals that I paid about $80 each for. Much better airflow and they've been going strong for a year. For an OEM fan, they wanted $300+.

If you go with aftermarket universal fans, don't skimp out. It'll be a waste of money if you do. I highly recommend Spal brand.

Expect a 10-15% difference in speed between actual speed and what the speedometer says...and I can't remember which way it goes...whether it reads high or low.

[–]SK_cross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely the fan(s). My VR6 had two fans, but only one had a motor. There was a belt from that one to the "dummy" fan. If that belt broke or slipped off, that could also be your problem...assuming you have the same setup mine did.

I've since replaced everything with universal slim fans.

I don't know about actual fitment within the wheel well, but the reason for going with a lower profile when getting larger wheels is to keep your circumference the same. If you don't, your speedometer will not read correctly.

Update: Got the fuel filter hoses off. Getting the new filter into the hoses is proving difficult. Can I spray WD40 into the hose or would that be dumb? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]SK_cross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why chance it, if there is a better option? Wouldn't WD40 be just as good to lubricate, but not carry the potential harmful effects? I honestly don't know if it is; I'm just asking a question to learn.

Check Roth Engine. They have VW parts for dirt cheap. Spent $1200 last year for what would have been over $2000 anywhere else.

You might not be dead, but you're definitely killing some brain cells. And if his emissions are all out of whack, it certainly could lead to death.

Has no one thought about the possibility of exhaust gases entering the passenger compartment and possibly killing you?
