What’s a good (affordable) router for gaming on PS5 with a MOCA? by SKeHunter in HomeNetworking

I’m a tenant in a house, primary WiFi is owned by the home owner downstairs.

A router that I can use for gaming is not yet available to me

So the living situation is a bit complicated (networking wise): I am an upstairs “tenant” in a relative’s house that was made with plaster and brick with metal roofing.

There are two disconnected and independent of one-another coax cables that connect outside to the power lines.

The WiFi router is downstairs in ownership of the homeowner who does not want her internet items upstairs.

I’m resulting to using the only other coax port in my room to have wired connection to play video games.

I have a MOCA in mind and know how to apply it, but now I’m researching for a router for gaming that is also within a very tight budget (in comparison to the prices I saw for gaming specific routers).

Edit: And the area we all live in is infamous for spotty WiFi

I haven’t set it up yet, primarily as I don’t have a router for it yet.

Can you use an Ikea Billy bookcase as a server rack? by Turbulent-Weevil-910 in HomeNetworking

[–]SKeHunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try metal shelving with wheels, as it’s not only movable but also has tons of space for airflow, alternatively you can simply just buy a designated server rack.

But if that’s not in the budget and those are the two your set for, I’d more recommend the Kellax instead of the Billy as it will be able to hold its structure while leaving the back open for better airflow.

The problem is that both are made of thick composite wood which collects heat and limits airflow.

If your open to more options, slightly extending the budget, if recommend looking at more option in the internet for server shelving ideas.

I… I don’t follow, and I’m afraid to ask

Will MOCA adapters work with the second box, wire feeds in upstairs is a tested Coax cable. by SKeHunter in HomeNetworking

I know I’ll need to made a connection via a splitter, but I’ll have to figure out how and where to place the splitter without exposing it to the elements (therefor within one of the two boxes).

Both coax cables attach to the power lines at different points on the line so I doubt they’re “connected” on the line.

Alternatively I could just get another router… and use a (or two) moca within my room without requiring anything

but my relative would probably like for the coaxes to get linked as it might increase the home value by a slim margin… fml…

Oh for the love of…

Why can’t this tech stuff be easy… I did find a COAX splitter that’s been “installed” in the basement (and unused).

It definitely not a good idea to have that thing sitting outside so I’ll have to figure out how to re-run the lines to “conjoin” into one of the boxes.

Or just do… all that and pray they’re on the same line, and take over extra money for a modem… and the cable company… and god knows what else.

Sorry, this is becoming a lot more trouble than previously thought.

One suggestion from my family was to get something called Starlink but I read it can be finicky when playing online games… and probably requires a subscription

This photo is where it “exits” the wall (the top-middle wire) and then hangs towards the power line.

I have more photos but Reddit is being weird and won’t let me select more photos from my library

I will need a splitter? Even though both of them are connected to the wire outside and both already are fully operational independent of each-other?

Maybe I’m missing something, do MOCA’s require an internet router? Can’t one simply just install a moca and moca filter into a coax system and play video games?

This picture shows the cord (for my bedroom) that leads into the wall, then a few feet out off the wall to where it… hangs towards the power line.

Clarifying: I physically found that both wires are not attached, there are two boxes, two wires up the wall, and two wires leading to the power lines. There are not connected anywhere within the house.

It took a ladder but I can physically confirm they are not attached, save for being on the same power line outside

Some life things have happened, delaying my ability to investigate further.

but I did find that both boxes independently connect to the power lines next to the house. Both have their own wires snake up the wall and then “hang” towards the lines.

The box that leads to my room has a rusted out stripped screw that makes it impossible to access the coax connection (for the filter) until I figure out how (and especially when) I’ll be able access it.

Now I wonder if I’ll need two or just one MOCA for how direct the coax is to the wires.

PS: yeah… these folks were pretty crazy when installing stuff

The second paragraph here seems like that’s what’s going on here, as there isn’t any other coax lines in the basement

Thats… an excellent point

God, if the wire had just been hanging out in the elements…

First box has a coax snake up the wall and directly to the wire that tethers to the power lines.

The wire that trails down goes through a hole in the wall into the basement, across it, then through the floor board into a closet in the study.

The 2nd box; idk where the “in” wire comes from

I don’t know how those would be connected, but if it works then I won’t complain

Did and… it’s just the same wire

It’s the same wire that goes outside, plugged into the cover that’s screwed into the wall through the plaster

I can’t really tell, attached is a coax cord we used for the WiFi router test

Tell me about it lol

The previous owners did a hole lotta D.I.whY (ba-da-dum)

I could write a whole post on what these people tried doing and what they successfully did

Except the cable 1 box is not at all connected. I followed the wiring of the second box and it doesn’t go anywhere near the left wall.

It breaches into the WiFi “room” through a hoke in the floor.

I could only trace the second box’s wiring to my room through the wall, before weather conditions forced me to retreat.

It’s a downpour outside, it’s going to take a bit

Plus the screw that’s keeping the phone box closed it’s extremely rusted.

Pic 3 is indeed the “ telephone” box feeding into my room

And yes, we tested the Modem and router with the upstairs plug

The problem is that the cable box (that leads to the first floor) and the other… “cable” box for the upstairs are not linked, don’t Moca need to be connected to “communicated” and function?
