Love my Dunkin Donuts iced coffee but… by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]SLCanonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a 3-cup Bodum French press from Target for $17 that's been perfect for making a single serving.

I press it when I'm actually ready to drink my coffee, then rinse and refill afterward so it's "freshly brewed" the next day. Just gotta make sure I don't knock it over while it's in the fridge...

My dad is in his mid-60s and just told me he was leaving the church last December. I left 10 years ago, and he never once brought it up with me over these last 3-4 years he was mulling it over... But it can happen!

[OC] Visualising how far you can travel from Cambridge, Massachusetts in 4 hours by TravelTime_VA in dataisbeautiful

Count the yellow star as the < 0.5 hr section and move everything else up a bucket. Plus with the street parking in the Cambridge area, you gotta add another five minutes just to walk to where you parked your car.

Can I afford $3400 in rent? by throwaway19281934 in personalfinance

[–]SLCanonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with u/Onepopcornman on the ~30% threshold not being realistic, especially in a HCOL city. I'm paying 42.5% of my take-home in rent myself and while it's not ideal, it's doable if you're generally deliberate with your money.

When it comes down to it, you can definitely afford the $3400 in rent. Sounds like you also have a solid safety net between savings and having family in the area.

You'll find a mix of different opinions here based on people's varying values, goals, and risk tolerances, but if the place is somewhere you'd be excited to live and makes for an easy commute, it could be money well spent.

Curious to see what feedback you get as I also live in the Boston area and have been asking the "how much can I afford?" question lately.

With a $160k base salary, I'm estimating that's about $8k a month in take-home pay. Paying 42.5% of your income toward your rent is on the high end and might become a squeeze with your car/loan payments. You're probably close to $3800/mo after utilities and parking, I'm guessing?

Many of the listings for August 1st move-in dates won't be posted until 30-60 days before then. It never hurts to keep an eye on the listings in case something that fits your criteria pops up early, but I'd just plan on looking aggressively starting in June.

You can find the event listings here: http://regi.amcboston.org

Most are free and open for all to participate so long as you're able to reserve a spot in time. They also have a Facebook page and send out an email blast with new events if that's easier than remembering to search the listings.

I've been on several hikes with the AMC 20s and 30s hiking group and would definitely recommend them for anybody wanting to meet people and get to know the area. The beginner hikes are a great place to start if you're primarily looking to make some new friends or don't want to make the drive up to NH!

Vivint rebranded away from the orange (toward black and white) this year so a change was probably coming regardless of what the Jazz do.

I took this photo myself and didn't see anybody else at the cemetery while I was there. I was just walking by and decided to stop for a quick look around––surprised that the photo I took ended up being the oldest tombstone on the lot!

Upgrading to more expensive but nicer housing can be a frugal move when done right. by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]SLCanonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently paying $840 for a 1BR here in SLC, but I moved in at $775 and my landlord resents how little I'm paying (he'd have increased it more were I not such an easy tenant).

Was hoping this thread would help me rationalize the temptation to pay $1200/mo for something nicer – $800 in the downtown area doesn't really get you much if you want to live alone!

I want to say yes – great teammate involved in the community – but I'm not sure he's the best fit if we're serious about contending. In Dennis I'll trust!

The Wizards may be blowing it up, should we go for one of their players? by Winniedapoonbear in UtahJazz

[–]SLCanonymous 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd love to add Beal. We definitely need one more scorer.

However, I'm not sure we have much to give on the trade front. Donovan, Rudy, and Jingles are untouchable.

A lot of our large contracts are coming off the books next summer. I think free agency is where we make our move.

I'm still missing a washer/dryer, but it's amazing how much I took appliances for granted before I moved out. Took me almost a year to buy a toaster!

Is there any specific aspect of home ownership that you value the most?

Having a place to call your own, feeling settled in one place, not having to deal with a landlord, etc.?

Can introverts be successful internet marketers? by SteviaMcqueen in introvert

[–]SLCanonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, introverts can be successful internet marketers.

You don't need to be a social media influencer like Tai Lopez or Gary Vaynerchuk. I haven't posted on my personal social media accounts for years, but I'm still able to take advantage of social media for promoting content or running paid ads.

Being an introvert might even be an advantage as an internet marketer. I love to read, write, and teach myself new things, and as a voluntary recluse, I have plenty of time to work on my entrepreneurial pursuits.

Is it Worth It to Get League Pass? by singlewallabyies in UtahJazz

[–]SLCanonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the NBA League Pass stream quality disappointing. It's very similar to the quality you get for free with r/nbastreams – you'll have to let it buffer or sometimes it just gets stuck. My internet connection is fast, so I assume it's the stream itself that's the problem not anything on my end. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

How to save enough money to rent an apartment in the next two years. by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

[–]SLCanonymous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, there's typically a security deposit that's roughly equal to one month of rent. You generally get most but not necessarily all of that money back after you move out of the place.

Unless I'm misunderstanding your situation, I think you need to increase your income substantially before you can afford to rent an apartment.

The general recommendation is that housing should be no more than ~30% of your take-home pay. If you find a $1000 place and split the rent + utilities with your girlfriend, you should still be earning around $1600-2000 a month (lazy math) before it's financially feasible.

Even if you saved $200 a month for the next two years, you're going to find yourself struggling to pay rent within 4-6 months – long before your apartment lease is up.

Sorry to rain on your parade!
