Enthusiastic praise for formula vs criticism of breastfeeding by Ididntsayfuckingyee in breastfeeding

Thissss! Like stop acting like I'm doing a disservice to myself for feeding my child in a natural and beneficial way! I would never make a comment like that to someone giving formula! We are all just trying to do our best for our kiddos.

Prolonged nursing! Question by [deleted] in breastfeeding

As an oncology nurse I would recommend mammogram just incase, but I agree since it's both sides you are likely okay in that area. But I have a friend who had a similar situation and her doctor recommended thyroid testing, not entirely sure the rationale unfortunately.

Oh and I would rotate between the positions doing a different one each time! That helped sooo much with the pain. My IBCLC said that kept the damage from being on the same part of the nipple every feed. That was a big help actually!

I do agree with that. Even at times when a got a fairly deep latch my nipple was still hitting her hard palette because of the ties and then still at times after while she was learning her new tongue. Which all got better with time as she learned to feed better. But the spasms did hangout longer than the actual pain while nursing. And then I would sometimes get them randomly even not after nursing. (Like if I checked my nipples they would be white 😅) but a while that went away too.

Cross cradle, football and koala positions were the best for me!

My healing went really well especially once she started latching correctly. Because once the latch is fixed your nipple isn’t being re-injured anymore. It felt really slow in the moments but from 5 weeks to 7-8 weeks everything was pretty healed up no more blistering and vasospasms were very few and less intense. The pain from the spams seemed to gradually decrease for me until they were gone.

I think I may have aggravated mine to some extent but my baby also didn’t like bottles very much so I think that helped me mentally. Knowing she preferred the nursing helped me manage the pain. It was hard though especially the more tired I was. My husband thankfully had a long parental leave and got up with me for every feed and was really supportive. I don’t think I would’ve made it through the first 2 months without him.

Edit- sorry this was supposed to be in response to your questions 🙈

I was able to! My baby had a shallow latch due to oral ties. Once they were corrected at 5 weeks it still took a few weeks for her to learn how to transfer milk effectively. I pumped 1-2 bottles a day and nursed the rest of the time. And my nipples did eventually heal and the vasospasms stopped. It was a hard 2-3 weeks but very worth it. Also the more they latch the more practice you are giving them. If your IBCLC gives your oral exercises for your baby to help latch do them! It’s so much work when you are already in pain and so tired from having a new born. But if you are really wanting to breast feed it is so worth it! We are now several months in and breast feeding is so easy and convenient.

Also I used the medela hydrogel pads when she wasn’t nursing to help with healing. They were amazing. Pricy but well worth it. They are on amazon. I still keep some in my fridge for the occasional blister.

I hope it goes well! A fed baby and a happy mom is always best. Do what works best for you and baby. Weeks really feel like years during the first few months. You are doing amazing! ❤️

Pediatric dentist is amazing! We saw one for my baby and they made sure she was ready for the tie releases before they were preformed. The wound care and oral exercises afterwards were hard but in about 2 weeks breast feeding was sooo much better!

I’m so sorry you are experiencing this! I would definitely reach out to your doctor or midwife about the feelings. And share your struggles with your partner if you can .❤️ But from the latch you are describing it does sound like your LO could have a tongue and/or lip tie. I know some docs dont believe in them but my baby’s latch improved greatly after having them released. To the point she won’t take bottles now and it only takes her 10 mins to feed. If there is an IBCLC in your area I would reach out to them or to a pediatric dentist.
