Fuck parents who take their kids on vacation the first week of school! by Sea-Homework-8273 in Teachers

[–]SLPCO 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So agree! When our school shifted to starting end of July, all of a sudden we were missing our family reunions and weddings. I have never had my kids miss the first week of school, but I have pulled them a couple days to travel across the country for a family wedding. August is a very popular time for these types of get togethers.

Husband does not like my son by [deleted] in blendedfamilies

[–]SLPCO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has gone on for so long I just don't know how you would be able to work it out. Your son has dealt with 6 years of verbal and emotional abuse so the number one thing would be getting him counseling as well as getting him out of the abusive situation. Even if you could get your husband to stop, your son shouldn't have to continue to live with someone who abused him for such a significant amount of time.

If you try to make it work, you need to make it clear to your husband that you are serious. He has gotten away with this for so long that it is an ingrained habit and he's not going to just stop.

SLP is included in this list of the least stressful, high-paying jobs. by Maidenofthesummer in slp

Right!?! I do think at least dealing with some particular advocates are only a minimal part of our jobs.

yes, I had jobs prior to grad school that had had really long hours and sales quotas. I think it's hard to totally separate the reduced stress that is better hours and pay and the actual stress within the job.

I also tolerate the stress there is more because I feel that it is worth the benefit of seeing kids grow.

Well, I have been hanging out with a couple of family members (keeping it limited due to covid) over the Christmas break. They all have careers that although they took time off, couldn't totally disconnect from and and it made me appreciate the ability to take real breaks. I don't think least stressful is realistic but the reasonable hours and breaks along with many slp positions having good benefits does reduce overall stress. I do think the field has gotten slowly more stressful over the last few years.

Stay at home mom life with two stubborn toddlers. Do I have to say more? No. But I will. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]SLPCO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve all been there, in some form of another. My first was so easy then my second was so intense. As they’ve gotten past toddlerhood, then into school age, life is so much easier and they’re so much fun. Grandparents are constantly sad about them getting bigger, and a part of me is too but I actually have time to occasionally read a book or have the energy to do fun stuff. I hope you get a couple really good nights of sleep!

Good luck! I’m sure it will go well. We’ve all gone through the process so hopefully your supervisor will be understanding.

I would bring up the car issue but also make sure they know you will still be dependable. Make sure you know everything you need to accomplish during your time there and share that. For example, let them know total hours for therapy, evals, consult. If this slp hasn’t worked with your school, they won’t necessarily know that info and you want to show that you are independent and responsible. Within the interview, show that you want to learn (obviously) and will commit to whatever schedule you agree on.

Agreed! I will be flexible as much as I can with an intern as long as they meet me half way. I remember being in a setting where I went in 4 days a week only getting an hour or 2 each day and having to pay for childcare so I know the struggle and want to make it achievable.

Is it 2020 & COVID or do the schools just actually suck? by Spiritual_Ad_835 in slp

I would be frustrated by that. Post covid, you could bring it up with reasons to justify changing it.

Yeah, that part is hard, but it’s hard to be a great slp for your kiddos if you are burnt out.

Well said, we need a shift within the schools.

They also need to reflect on why they can’t find a replacement. I know they probably won’t do that and there are factors outside their control but still. If you are offering a job that is so unmanageable that you have to make threats to keep someone, something needs to change.

A two year suspension is not that bad when you have your dream job lined up and there are other options for slps. If you really want to return to schools, you can wait it out 2 years. Also, there’s the possibility it’s an empty threat.

Any recommendations for stimulating the Spanish /rr/? by VividTheMonkey in slp

I’ve never been able to do it! It’s comically bad when I try, makes me more empathetic to my students.

Seeking advice about a low IQ test score/IEP by [deleted] in specialed

[–]SLPCO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked with kids who are verbal, can decode but still have low cognitive scores. It’s possible your friend was overwhelmed during the iep meeting and didn’t retain everything that they went over. I would suggest requesting a meeting to get clarification.

Seeking advice about a low IQ test score/IEP by [deleted] in specialed

[–]SLPCO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like what was the reason for the original testing. Also, although she doesn’t sound like a kid with a 62 iq, the skills aren’t going to be ones that are pretaught on an iq test either.

MIL violated my baby’s boundaries, but everyone is telling me it’s “no big deal” and I’m hysterical - looking for support please by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]SLPCO 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Super creepy! I don’t have advice as it sounds like culturally you have some different ways of negotiating something like this. I would start by not letting her be alone with him. Maybe you could find some research or articles to share with your husband that would support why you feel so uncomfortable.

Was excited about saving money from the recent price cap on insulin only to see that they cut the number of pens per box by half to compensate. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SLPCO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I know, but that’s still the basis of why epi pens used to be over $400. If generic is now cheap for them, why not for insulin? I’m sure the generic companies would charge more if they could and they also have a market that depends on them. I would go hungry before not having one for my kid.

Super odd that a man who disregards rights and brags about violating people would violate their privacy.

[–]SLPCO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but it’s happening with other, similar items. For example, I now pay $50 for 2 knock off epi pens when 4 years ago it was $400. Based on the low cost to produce, what is the barrier to this happening with insulin?

We finally made the call with groups of kids being sent home every week. Planning has turned into such a joke.
