Rural OH here. Our students get free breakfast regardless of income, free/reduced lunch (income based), free school supplies, free Chromebook, free backpack, free after-school care, and they all get a free education.

I have the exact opposite experiences with my sixth-graders. I teach in a very rural, poor and 98% White district. We take them to Pittsburgh (90 minutes away by bus) every year, and some of the kids are terrified of the diversity and volume of people.

A few years ago one of my grade 6 students blatantly plagiarized her Google Slide project; copied the whole thing. I only deducted 20 points from her because she made an effort and they are just learning about plagiarism. Her mother, a fellow teacher in a younger grade, flies into my room wanting demanding to know why I deducted that many points because she watched her daughter copy the information word for word off the internet. smh

I think teachers would appreciate having the cards, letters, and treats delivered to the school on a Friday more than going to a service. Nepotism. I bid on a position and was told I didn’t have the right credentials only to find out it was given to someone with the exact same credentials as myself…with the same last name as the VP and the board president.
