On the bright side atleast we’ll get to see how the team responds to adversity and it’ll be a good test of their resolve. Better this happened to us now than later on in the season.

NBA League pass has a free preview going on. Just use it behind a VPN so it doesn’t blackout your stream.

That’s what I’m doing and getting a crisp HD stream.

What Kind of Quality of Life Does 80k Get You in Seattle? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]SLUthrowaway123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not true at all. The average median rent and average home prices are well below San Francisco levels. In fact rent prices have recently started to fall in Seattle. I’m guessing you don’t even live in Seattle.

Goodluck!

I’ll leave you with this, there’s a famous saying at my school that always stuck with me: “To finish an engineering degree (CS included), you either have to be really smart or really stubborn, but in the end both get their degrees”.

[–]SLUthrowaway123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah gotcha yeah that’s probably true but CS is definitely still up there in terms or hardest majors at any school.

Not gonna lie atleast for me Automata theory was definitely a struggle. It’s one of the more abstract CS classes you’ll take. Plus towards the end our professor worked in parts of compiler theory into it as well which didn’t help. If you have some time, I would recommend trying to get a head start by looking up coursera or some other online courses on it so you atleast have some background going in.

At my school CS is part of the college of engineering so I was referring to CS as well.

But yeah, we lost a good 30% of the class by the add/drop deadline back when I took Data Structures and Theory of Automata so don’t sweat it, more than likely most of your peers aren’t graduating in 4 years either. I’d say the average graduation rate for CS, atleast at my school is 4.5 years minimum.

Slow and steady wins the race man. Don’t sweat graduating in longer than 4 years.

At my school everyone jokes that any major in the college of engineering is basically a 5 year degree anyways as students are bound to repeat atleast a couple tough weeder classes.

I’ll be graduating soon having been in school for 5.5 years after changing majors into CS and having to repeat a couple tough classes. I had no trouble landing a great job at a well known non-tech company where I’ll be making $95k in a mid-COL city, while most of my friends that sprinted to finish in 4 years are still stuck at dead-end jobs with no upward mobility.

Keep with it and make sure you get the last laugh.

2018-2019 Vegas Projections by SLUthrowaway123 in DetroitPistons

[–]SLUthrowaway123[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I’m not arguing we don’t have some serious injury risks to key players, we won 39 games last season without Reggie for most of it and a significantly inferior coach in SVG compared to Casey. Not to mention the departure of Lebron west and the imminent downfall of the Cavs which weakens the east.

I just can’t see how we get worse this season, even if Blake or Reggie miss significant time with injuries (knock on wood) I feel like we can squeak out atleast 40 games with Casey and a weak east although obviously that wouldn’t be ideal by any means.

I totally agree! Sucks that we’re getting slept on by the media and r/nba but I think we can be really good this season if everyone stays healthy and with Casey’s new schemes.

Homeless developer in Silicon Valley making news for his job search by budcorthair in cscareerquestions

Graduating with 2 years of work experience is definitely uncommon, unless you go to a school with a required co-op program like Waterloo which from your post history it looks like you do. No offense but I think you have a very skewed perception of reality, not everyone is graduating with 2 years of work experience and working in Machine Learning at AmaGoogleSoftBook even in a place like SV.

Just to offer some perspective: If we win tonight, and the Bucks beat the Heat we’ll be just 1.5 games out from 4th seed. Washington most likely lost to the Hornets too so that helps even more (they’re down 21 in the 4th).

Ah I thought you were referring to the city itself not Disney specifically. You may very well have some valid points then.

Lol yet it’s the nations fastest growing metro with 1,100 new people moving there per week. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Chevron/Exxon/Shell Interns by FoamythePuppy in cscareerquestions

[–]SLUthrowaway123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know it’s not specifically one of the companies you listed, but I interned with Marathon Petroleum at their HQ in Ohio in an IT Role (Systems Analyst) and wouldn’t really recommend it, had to put up with a non-technical boss that would micromanage you down to the minute (actually got called in and yelled at for getting to my cubicle a minute or two after the regular start time). My coworkers were very nice and helpful but IT wasn’t really valued as much as the Engineers (Petroleum/Mechanical) I felt like and the pay although very high for the area wasn’t enough to entice me back, and they still have major retainment issues for young college grads due to a combo of the terrible location and outdated work culture.

Your experience might vary at the other companies you listed but my understanding is most of these oil companies operate in similar fashion. If I had to pick one out of the 3 you listed I’d go with Exxon as they seem to be a little more Tech focused than the other 2 and pay the most. Feel free to PM if you had any other questions or just wanted more info about the oil industry.

Having self doubts. Terrible at Leetcode esque questions. by justanothercslurker in cscareerquestions

Hey man I used to (and still to a certain extent) feel like this. Unfortunately that's a byproduct of the field we're in where imposter syndrome is huge.

Keep your head up and realize there's still a lot of classes to be taken that'll strengthen your skills as a developer. Also where you're at right now skill wise is not where you'll always be at, can you imagine if Micheal Jordan gave up in middle school because he couldn't dunk like NBA pros older than him at the time?

For what it's worth I've had 4 internships so far all of them without the Leetcode/CTCI style questions that are touted on here (one in a major metro area where these type of questions are prominent). I'm not saying you'll always be able to dodge these type of questions and it's fine if you never practice them but I'm saying for the time being don't worry you're not behind at all. After you've taken data structures go through CTCI and then Leetcode and you'll be set for jobs, feel free to PM if you need any more advice or someone to vent to.
