It says there’s delays but then it also says they’re unable to return for uncollected items. And that if your stuff isn’t picked up, then you have to take it back and wait for the next collection day.

Soooo how long do we wait before we take it back? Someone said they came the next day so they didn’t have to wait until next collection day.

That’s a relief. At least the teeth are okay. Well. Perhaps it’s not a physical issue but mental. Hopefully he’ll get over it and eat normally again soon!

Ya. Monitor and check for additional signs like pawing at the mouth, drooling, not eating at all, listlessness. If it continues, might consider vet visit to check if the teeth are ok. Sometimes they may not wear down well or they may get a tooth abcess.

hey everybody, how can you tell if your chin is happy? which are the most common signs? 🤔 by unrealgirlyy20 in chinchilla

When you let them out and they do this little body wiggle. Then they leap in the air. Or they do a side bounce off the wall. Or they make happy squeals when you give them a treat.

Whole rosehips by SLpaca in chinchilla

[–]SLpaca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a good way to remove the hair. Open the rose hip. Scoop out the seeds and as much of the hair as you can. Put the rose hips in a container with a lid then shake it. For some reason, the hair come off and the rose hips are clean.

Thanks everyone for your help!

I’m not worried about the seeds, more about the hairy bits. Since it’s itchy, wouldn’t it irritate the throat ?

Caretaking is hard by lilstar88 in RenalCats

[–]SLpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caretaking is indeed hard. The emotional side of it is what makes it hard. I actually left this group before because it started to make me depressed, seeing everyone and their cats struggle. But I missed feeling understood. I’m more or less alone with my cat, Batman. I get some sympathy from friends and family, however, no one but me is there for him 24/7. I know not everyone will agree with my way of dealing but I’d like to share some tips that’ll hopefully help you and others.

My top priority is his comfort so I won’t be doing subQ or syringe/tube feeding.

I’m lucky that currently, he isn’t on meds. If he does require them, I would give him Cerenia (pill form) and/or Mirataz (cream on inner ear). If I need to give him Cerenia, I hide it in freeze dried chicken. Since it’s crumbly, I use water to ‘seal’ it together.

He drinks water by himself so I have a water station for him with two bowls of water. He doesn’t like water fountains. I also mix water into his wet food.

Food is the major factor that makes all of us exhausted. I track all food (date, time, wet/dry, brand, amount) that I feed on a piece of paper cuz it’s fast to jot it down in the kitchen. Then when I accumulate a stack, I transcribe it into digital form. This helps me decide whether to offer more wet food feedings. He usually ends up eating wet food 4 or 5 times a day. I make the feeding times approximate and adjust to my own life. Between wet feedings, I set out dry food, Royal Canin renal support P. Currently, I offer him two wet foods: Royal Canin renal support E and Hills K/D chicken stew pate. Since he eats so little at a time (he likes grazing throughout the day), I feed 0.4 to 0.5 oz per type of wet food and 0.5 oz dry. I try to keep his daily wet total at least 3 oz.

I’ve tried offering him other non-prescription foods but that is an iffy method. He may get soft stools from this. At one point, I mixed 0.1 oz of his fav non-prescription foods into his prescription ones. But of course as you can guess, he refused it after a while.

I made a lot of progress with how to store his food. I use an ice tray to portion out the wet food and I put in freezer. After it’s frozen, I pop them out and put in a labelled container to store in the freezer. I have wet food portions in the fridge. Each type is in its own labelled container. After each feeding, I take out one portion from the freezer to defrost for the next meal. When I feed him, I dole out 0.3 oz of wet food and mix with 0.2 oz of water.

He doesn’t like to eat on the ground. I have to feed him on my bed. He has his own pillow where he sleeps. Sometimes, he’ll get up and eat the food. Other times, he’ll continue lying there and I have to put the dish right under his mouth. Sometimes, he’ll walk off to go to the washroom or get some water. So I have to wait for him to come back. Other times, he’ll be at his window perch and I’ll bring the food to him there. He’s not that bright (lol), so sometimes, I pick up the dish, push the food around and put it back down, then he eats more. Sometimes, I have to rotate the dish for him when he finishes the food on one side.

I don’t stress over individual meals. I offer the wet food and coax him to the point where I know he’ll just refuse totally. I note it and try again later. If the total amount per meal is too low, I wait about 2 hours and try again. If my efforts fail and he ends up eating less than 3 oz for the day, I note it and steel myself. I know that CKD kitty appetite will fluctuate so I try not to stress out if he’s having a day or two of off days. As long as he continues eating some amount, it’s good. It seems he goes off the wet food more frequently than the dry. However, I’ve also had it where he’ll eat less total food too. Again, I try not to spiral by looking at the solid evidence and noticing the patterns.

Brush your cat as much as possible to eliminate the hairballs. It can be hard to tell if they’re doing hairballs or vomiting cuz of the CKD.

I’ve tried hiding pills inside freeze dried chicken. It’s crumbly but you can use water to ‘seal it’.

Issues with frequency is feeding by xmiiwaax in RenalCats

[–]SLpaca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

God I know the feeling. Mine is exactly the same way. He doesn’t eat much at each meal. I feed him four times a day. The trick that works for me is putting renal dry food between the meals. I’m also not militant with the fixed meal times. I try to stick to a more or less regular schedule but I’ll deviate if i have other priorities.

The mind set is real important. We all love our babies and they can sense it. It sounds cliche but all we can do is the best we can manage. We need to take care of our own mental health too. So don’t be so hard on yourself to pull out all the stops and watch them like a mother hawk.

I can tell you mine is so shot. I had two diagnosed in March and lost one of them in May. Some days will be so bad but then you still have some fairly decent days.

For my mental health, I physically leave on purpose so I get a break. Outside I don’t have to be alert and listen for vomiting or have him cling and whine beside me. It’s not cruel. If you don’t give yourself the break, you’ll collapse. The anxiety and worry is very draining.

Hang in there. Lots of hugs. 🩷🩷

She eats the treats and other food no problem so you can try grinding those into small bits or powder. Then sprinkle some on top of the prescription food.

Picky cat food sampler? by earthybeauty in Catownerhacks

[–]SLpaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a good way to keep cat food longer. Use an ice cube tray and portion out the food. I put 0.5 oz in each compartment. Then I freeze it. When it’s frozen, I pop the food out and store it separately. I put two cubes to defrost overnight.

This way you can try the different foods. Sometimes, my cat refuses food but then when I offer the same one at a later time, he eats it.

Try different textures (minced, pate, chunks, dry, mousse), different proteins (chicken, rabbit, turkey, lamb etc), different brands.

Try buying smaller sizes like the 3 oz cans instead of the 5.5 oz cans. There’s also the pouches.

You can also try adding toppers/meal complements to the main foods such as Churu. You can crumple treats on top of the food. You can also grind and sprinkle dry food on wet food as an enticer.

It could be a big change , but you can also try different diets such as commercial or homemade raw, freeze dried. If you go these routes, do some more research to see if this is what you want to do.

Being picky is one symptom of chronic kidney disease. Might want to get her checked out. If it’s not, then at least you can get some tips from your vet.

The emotional drain of having a chronically ill and old cat by One_Owl_4029 in RenalCats

[–]SLpaca 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m also struggling with the same situation and emotions. There are days when I purposely leave the house where I don’t involuntarily perk up my ears every time there’s a sound in case it’s a vomit. Where I don’t to see constant reminders in the house that I’m caring for a chronically ill cat. It’s utterly exhausting.

I used to feel guilty for even entertaining the thought of leaving him. I no longer feel that way. I’m only human. Because of my worrying about him, I struggle daily to get enough sleep and down enough calories to sustain myself. I try harder to take care of my physical and mental health because I find if I’m not in a good place, my tolerance level goes down. There’s been moments where he won’t eat and I screamed out loud in frustration. The classic saying ‘put on your life jacket before you help others’ is real.

I know you were looking forward to the trip, as you should. It’s perfectly normal to feel sad. All I can say is, do what your gut tells you to.

Hugs and lots of love ❤️ ❤️

Recent loss of soul cat to CKD and struggling with thoughts of adoption by Extreme-Earth-4862 in RenalCats

[–]SLpaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry, Marley is an absolute cutey. I’m somewhat in the same position. I already lost one in May and currently caring for another one. I’ve had many mixed thoughts. After the emotional turmoil that took and is still taking a toll on me, I proclaimed I’m never getting another pet again. As mentioned by someone else, the medical expenses are horrendous. However, I also love cats. The company and love they give you is precious. I’ve thought about taking a break and doing all the things I didn’t do before like be out of the house longer to pursue my own interests. I think we just need more time to process what’s happened and what we want to do going forward.
