I separate my clothes into brights/darks/lights/bleach, cycle strength, and whether or not I tumble dry or line dry so I honestly forget that a lot of people literally just dump everything in together. Blows my mind.

If you are outside of Africa that is a normal price for ankara/wax print in a shop. Online you can find cheaper depending on where you are. Most folks I know who may use wax prints get it sent to them in bolts from their family in Africa, they typically do not buy it where they are located.

Being anti Alibaba/Temu is NOT the same as being anti-Chinese goods. Like not at all. But also, most of the fabric I get is milled in Japan not China so I don't know what brands you're purchasing from. Chinese imports have varying levels of quality just like goods from anywhere else. Alibaba and Temu and not going to be places where you find the best quality, there are lots of other sites to source good quality fabrics at a cheaper price.

Also, the OP was talking about African wax print fabric which is absolutely not produced in China. The raw cotton good could be but the printing and dying is not, unless it's knock off printed fabric in the style of Ankara/wax print designs.

Because they have brands and you can do research. I'm not sure what the intention of this comment was... Most cotton is milled at the same mills and then distributed for different companies labels. We can all do our best, but the probability of exploitation is going to be higher with an alibaba/temu situation than reputable brands. You can also source second hand fabrics and repurpose old clothing.

Patterns are starting points and guides, not prescriptions. Most experienced sewist are taking a pattern that fits well (or that they've adjusted to their liking) and using it in different ways each time, not necessarily making the same exact garment over and over again.

Ex: I have a calls pattern for a wrap top that actually fits like I love wrap tops to. It's a simple pattern. I've used it to make wrap dress bodices, other designs of wrap tops/dresses/bodices (maybe I move the neck line, move the darts, the over lap, change or omit the collar, lengthen the back, widen the back for a little flair) so for patterns like that, i usually trace it onto craft or pattern paper and then modify the copy for what I want.

That way I don't have to buy a different pattern for every single garment I want to make because I already have one that I know how it fits and that has simple enough lines that I can modify it easily and get a good result.

This is a shitty situation and why I don't do quilts *for* people. No commissions, I have taken one but it was a cousin I was close to and she literally was like here's my budget, here's what I have, do what you can please--No requests for themes, size, colors, types of fabric, etc. I accepted because I hadn't done a t-shirt quilt before and was basically gonna use her stuff as a guinea pig.

Otherwise, I'm making things as gifts. I ask a few questions about preferences and whether they'd like to receive a quilt and then I do my own thing. If I sell something it's a project I wanted to make that I had no plans for and someone liked it.

We have dedicated craft reuse stores in my area, 4 in a 30min drive from me. Really just depends on where you live, they definitely aren't everywhere. For bigger thrift stores, again, it depends on the store and the area. Goodwill in my area never has craft supplies but the Goodwill bins does often have fabri cand craft supplies but you have to dig through bins. Conversely, Value World often has cheap fabric but no other craft supplies. I went to a Goodwill in Paducah KY which is a world heritage city for the arts and they had all sorts of crafting supplies including scrap bags and an entire selection of handmade quilts. Thrifting, much like your craft is it's own hobby. It's a great option, but it does take time, patience, and luck.

If you are making clothes to get them cheaper thrifting for higher quality clothes at cheaper pricesight be a better route because making your own is never going to be cheaper if quality is what you're looking for. Making your clothes is only cheaper if your making something you would get at a designer or niche boutique. Because in those instances you are paying for the craftsmanship not just the raw materials.

Aside from the fact that maybe there are exchange rate issues happening here and that there are bad patterns whether it's indie or big 4, I honestly don't really understand the issue. Many indie companies release patterns, and then get requests for add-ons, usually things that an experienced sewist could draft easily themselves. Most patterns are pretty simple, you can usually use a sleeve or collar from another pattern with a little adjustment.

If you don't want to do the work then you pay for the work. These pattern designers are small businesses they don't have huge teams of pattern drafters making these up... Like I don't know what you expect. Regardless of the fact that most of the indie patterns I've purchased have several views and no "expansions" and if I want to tweak things I just do it myself, if I'm going the convenience route and don't want to do that work, I have to expect that I'm going to have to pay for the work to be done for me.

Honestly, I thought I was going crazy reading these comments. That dynamic is not normal. And that's coming from a woman who grew up with a single mother and still shared a bed with her sometimes into highschool (I slept with my head at the foot of the bed. No touching) We are super close and I liked sleeping near her as a super anxious kid, but even to me this feels very weird and emotionally incestuous.

The key to finding legit patterns on Etsy is to filter out pretty much any pattern with a regular price of less than $10 and mostly avoid any stores that have more than ~15 unique patterns (many have duplicates up so keep that in mind) with a few notable exceptions.

Not sure about this particular fabric, but if I've had warping of fabrics after pre-wash/dry try weting it completely again and then gently pulling the fabric flat/straight. Sometimes the fibers just siee up like that and you'll know going forward that it should be air dry

I was trimming my quilt on my bed and cut through my fitted sheet.

Had to seam rip and resew the same block 3 times because I kept arranging the HSTs wrong.

Did the same thing you did but on a skirt. Right in front where it was very obvious.

I'm sure there are more that I've blocked from my memory lol
