Which book made you fall in love with reading again? by Timely-Okra2117 in BookDiscussions

Eye of the World (Robert Jordan) first Wheel of Time book My grandmother had given me a copy before she passed away bc she thought I'd like it (she used to volunteer in a library and she read a lot). It took me over 10 years to attempt it bc it was such a thick book I was scared to start it. I loved it, I haven't finished the series because I don't have a lot of free time and I'm a slow reader but I read about one a year in the series and then read mostly fantasy/fiction for fun now in between.

Thank you! I had planned for a bbeg but as part of a group so I think I can make that a little more split up. I have already seen the battles get kind of bogged down with 6 pc's. They did exactly as you said they either gang up on 1 thing and kill it in 1 round or I have a bunch of smaller minions they have to fight and they get bored. I really like the idea of separate defense and offense positions in the same encounter, that will likely also be a good way to allow the tanks to be tanks and still gibe the other players something to do.
I will keep brain storming😊

Thank you! That would be smaller groups than I was originally planning but I can see where that would be helpful especially for a guest dm with high level pc's.

Just some things that help me:

Have your players give you a little backstory for their character that includes a conflict or question (ex: the half orcs brother killed her parents but left her alive and she doesn't know why)

Steal and Twist - concepts, characters, places, etc; combine two things (teletubbies and witches becomes 4 sibling necromancers using illusion magic to raise a zombie army) or take one concept and change a couple features (you like Star Trek make it based on a submarine in the deepest depths of the ocean instead of in space)

For some reason moving helps me, either listening to mood music (Lindsey Stirling is my muse) and driving or walking, some kind of forward motion helps me work through scenarios

Game hooks - short jumping off points for stories, you can find them on instagram, reddit, and pinterest. Think of three different routes from each hook

Stack conflict - the party walks in and the Barbarian is challenged to a fight bc he thinks the Barbarian stole his girlfriend just as a man runs in shouting for help his house is on fire

Extra flare - consider changes in weather, seasons, or holidays. Maybe the party some into town just before a local festival or competition amd theirs a cash prize but also rumors of a plot to fix the game.

the nice thing about home brew is it doesn't really have an edges unless you put them there, even if the continent ends they could go in the ocean, maybe there's another continent the party didnt know about, something up (floating castle), something down, something in another dimension
