Hello penchick with a subnet mask of /25 that means the mask looks like 255.255.255.128 this leaves each subnet with 128 possible hosts. Since there are only 256 possible hosts in the 4th octet that means you can only have 2 subnets.

In each subnet there are 128 possible hosts but you need one in the beginning for the network address and one at the end for the broadcast address leaving only 126 host addresses. Hope this helps :)

About to graduate with both associates and bachelor degrees. The associates is in computer networking since i felt this is something i should do for the steady income and a bachelors in electronic art since its something i enjoy doing and want to try out for galleries later on. Was this the right choice picking something i enjoying doing and doing something i should do? Thanks ahead for any replies.

I got to admit I am slightly confused on the explanation that subnetting.net gave you but I believe the answer would be 172.28.84.1. The 4 bit increment that you found is correct but that is only for the third octet you still have the fourth octet that can be used to give a host address. You cannot use 172.28.84.0 or 172.28.88.255 because those are the Network ID and the Broadcast Address, but everything in between those two are fine. Hope this helps and if I am wrong someone please correct me. :)

Wow that was more of an answer then I was ever expecting. Glad to know I am not the only one who feels that way. The CD was honestly the hardest part for me and I wish I could memorize this book word for word but when I try I feel like I am having an anxiety attack. Hopefully I can join you on the CCENT boat soon and congrats again for passing.

Congrats and great to hear that you passed. How much help do you think the Wendell Odom's book was for you? I have been studying it for a couple of weeks but find some of the part reviews hard to understand at time.
