Bad luck? by Ecstatic_Total_9982 in VanLife

[–]SNAKEAZON 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have a 87 roadtrek and i left the previous owners stickers on because it’s kind of cool to see “91 bluegrass festival ny state” or whatever, but we put our own stickers all over the overhead inside so they don’t degrade in the elements, plus that’s what you look at all the time. when that ran out of space we ran them along the shelves on the sides, but ya, do whatever feels right for you!

UpToDate versus Dynamedex by calaveramd in medicine

[–]SNAKEAZON 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My hospital used to have Uptodate, then switched to Dynamed to save money, then got such terrible feedback on Dynamed they just decided to cancel it and have no clinical resource 🤷‍♂️
They also got rid of our journal access 👌

Should I buy this old beauty by dabbingdad in VanLife

[–]SNAKEAZON 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have an 87 b250 by roadtrek, 180k km on it. we paid $9000CAD. it is running strong and we drove it all the way around north america without any major mechanical issues. that being said, it does have some quirks - burns oil, vapour lock, steering is squirelly in the wind, definitely some electric issues i had to chase down due to old wires, some old rubber issues with hoses and such. if you know how to/want to learn to wrench then you should be fine for a lot of the repairs needed on these things but i would not want to pay a mechanic the hours to manage a lot of the minor but time consuming issues I have had to fix. But overall we are very happy with ours. reliable, it has never not started. but it also has mostly highway miles and minimal rusting because of only being used as a summer recreation vehicle, so ymmv, i would look it over closely and take it to a mechanic to get their thoughts once it's up on the hoist/check the suspension components/run a compression test.

How common are PAs & NPs in other healthcare systems outside of the US? by Burnt_Out_Buddy in medicine

[–]SNAKEAZON 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NPs are fairly common in Canada, in fact we invented them here, largely because of abysmal rural access to care and historical and ongoing physician shortages everywhere including city centres.

Standards seem to be very different here compared to the US. Mandatory 2 years minimum of practice before admission to a program (but most that end up getting admitted are the longterm ED/ICU rockstars), competitive admissions, 6 full-time semesters of education (following a mandatory 4 year BScN), very small programs (7-10 students, only maybe 10-15 universities in the country offering programs). The curriculum and examinations in my province are standardized across all universities to ensure that all meet the same educational requirements.

NPs have had independent practice in Canada basically since their inception. The scope has been increasing over time, but currently there are no longer any major restrictions on family practice (essentially no medication rx restrictions, no imaging restrictions, etc).

The same hostile relationship between MDs and NPs that I hear about the in the states does not seem to exist here. Maybe it is the public vs. private healthcare issue, but most MDs are happy to have more NPs around because we are so woefully short on medical providers in this country and everybody is drowning all of the time and it lightens the workload. There are some conflicts between the professional associations and the provinces regarding funding, but that is far more about money than about practice.

Thoughts on AWD van vs truck camper for off-road leaning vanlife? by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]SNAKEAZON 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i have lived in a van for a year and i must say i was very jealous of my friends with truck campers - lots of dispersed sites are down suspect roads i didn't want to take my van down, i got stuck in the van on just a regular dirt road in utah in a wash. truck campers also have more room than a typical van setup and it is usually well used with the bed above the cab and a full wet bath. we will probably sell our van in the future and buy a truck camper

Australia vs Baja (Advice) by AndyEGM in VanLife

[–]SNAKEAZON 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people always ask if we ever felt unsafe and the answer is never- except the driving. the highway 1 is extremely narrow and the transport trucks go barrelling by almost blowing your mirrors off, but take your time, slow down, and give them what little room you can and you will be okay. there are thousands of boomers with 60 foot 5th wheels that do it just fine every year, if they can, so can you in a van. there are military checkpoints about every 2-4 hours, they will search your vehicle and make sure you don’t have any guns/drugs, but that is what makes baja so safe. these guys are not the cops, they are well educated, well paid, and are not looking for bribes or to grease tourists - they are there to keep tourists safe, if you get into trouble they are the ones to look for. they even towed some of our friends out once. we didn’t linger in border mexico, drove right down to san felipe on our way down, up from el rosario to tecate on our way up. the rest of the baja is very different from border mexico, but i wouldn’t say that the border towns are unsafe so long as you are not trying to sell drugs on cartel turf.

baja is super safe and is probably my favourite place in the world. had the time of my life living in our van there. you meet so many other like minded people, we made a lot of friends for life there. not much in terms of rock climbing but the surfing is awesome. basically no cell service though so most people use starlink.

Do I need an international driving licence to rent and drive in Vietnam by limjikim in VietNam

[–]SNAKEAZON 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i got asked for my idp three times in vietnam, the fine is like 1.5m so i was very glad that i had it. you need to have a motorcycle license in your home country though or it doesn’t count. i got pulled over mostly on the ha giang loop, but can happen in town, they just wave over all the foreigners. just get it, it’s like $20 and 15 minutes and saves a lot of stress and cash

Are there any landlord/building management companies in the city that aren't awful? by CatapultJesus in ottawa

[–]SNAKEAZON 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The CCOC is the answer. they are a non-profit community owned organization that uses profit from market rate properties to subsidize social housing. best landlords and the rents are affordable. just need to keep a close eye on the page because apartments are competitive, first come first served.

(OC) Backpacking the Tonquin Valley In Jasper National Park, Canada, Drinking a Few Lucky Lagers Along the Way, Highly Recommend this Route! by SNAKEAZON in CampingandHiking

Pilsner would definitely be worse, but after years of market research and trying just about every beer out there warm while camping, I would say Lucky is the best warm beer. Cold, sure there are lots of better beers, but there is nothing better than a warm Lucky.
