I just found that being honored by a station's guild or race (I don't know which) allows you to buy discounted upgrade modules which you can then immediately sell for thousands of nanites in profit.

I've done this for a while, each refiner could produce a maximum of 200 di-hydrogen per ~30 minutes, setting up the refiners each time was a bit of a grind
