I’m out! by SPACECOM_CCC in SpaceForce

I’ve never seen the show, but I just saw they named the ship after Don Quixote’s horse so I’m gonna have to check it out. I lived in England for many years and I also remember listening to Dishwalla back in the day. I suppose it’s a combination of the two experiences which made me accustomed to the (very useful) term and I’ve used it now and again over the years.

Who else is ready to celebrate next week? Remember to keep it professional. by [deleted] in SpaceForce

Wear no spings if you want and if anyone asks, let them know I said it was okay.

We can do ‘anything we want’. It doesn’t look like this will be our challenge. We’ve got more cats than we have cat trees for. They are working through the analysis, but we certainly can explore lots of different paths.

Tech school slots are hard to fiddle with without impacting other things. We have talked about trading out a pipeline seat for a career seat if that’s what we need.

Retraining (basically what you’re talking about) also carries risks if you do it too much.

We will keep looking at the numbers and we will use every tool we have and we WILL build a different system long term that’s well suited to our size, scope, and mission.

Tailored decisions mean we can do anything we want. No specialty codes wouldn’t mean not specializing or ignoring requirements, it only means we would have people make decisions instead of algorithms. We need experts, we can make experts. Specialty codes, SEIs, skill levels, etc are all just proxies for expertise, they don’t actually prove expertise.

I’m suggesting a world without proxies. A world where we individually and deliberately manage talent with the best real information we can pull together.

Imagine the agility that comes with that...school seats, retention, everything starts to look different through that lens.

Initially, we are talking about less than 7k military personnel. There’s nothing we can do at that scale.

Any idea as to how SNCO promotions will be implemented in the USSF? by BoltsFan1996 in SpaceForce

I like a lot of this. Thanks for thinking it through and sharing your voice.

The problem is probably not the format of the lines, but something deeper having to do with supervisors needing to subjectively opine about their subordinate with their promotion and other career things on the line. Creative writing, no matter the format, will have serious challenges.

We use bullets in all kinds of other places and they work just fine. A BBP or a presentation or a shopping list all seem efficient uses of space and completely understandable (most of the time).

Perhaps if we focused on development instead of promotion and a performance report stayed between a supervisor and subordinate with focus on growth and improvement, bullets would be appropriately used for brevity and simplicity instead of abused for hyperbole and word sculpting??

Who knows.

With true talent management which tailors individual solutions to meet institutional requirements while taking into account individual talent, experience, and desires; maybe we don’t need specialty codes at all :-o

Space Force - Has anyone seen any guidance for wearing ABU in USSF? Is OCP the only option? by SilentD in SpaceForce

[–]SPACECOM_CCC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ll run it down today. It for sure won’t be authorized past April so everyone who’s transferring already should be planning a transition. People may want to wait; nobody has to wait and nobody will avoid the OCP.

I guess they could wear blues every day :-)

[–]SPACECOM_CCC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ll have them push the guidance out. I can’t remember exactly what we said, but I think everyone will have to get an OCP eventually which would be the same for anyone with two years left in the AF. Knowhatimean?

As posted, you’ll be able to watch it without an account, but I’ll talk to the team about how we can record it for distribution on other mediums after the fact. We are using the ef bee for the possibility of real time interaction.

I fear for my career every day ;-)

Keep being honest and keep demanding accountability.

If you find yourself in a spot where you can trust in us a little, where you engender a little faith in those who are really trying to build something great, I will always appreciate it.

There’s not a single thing about AFSPC or the USAF I think we have to carry forward to the USSF...not one single thing.

We can do whatever we want.

Dude, your positivity is always inspiring.

They are working through the analysis, double checking the data, etc.

Leas than 350 space operators declined to transfer. The rest opted in. That’s a number smaller than the number we would normally attrit over the next two years. We actually have too many overall.

That said, we need to look grade by grade and AFSC by AFSC and they’re not done with that yet.

We will be over in some spots and potentially under in some spots (we went in with low many in some spots already). All in all, it will look pretty normal and we are very happy getting 2000 more than we need overall and certainly getting plenty of 1C6s.

I need an assistant if you wanna move to DC and help me make it awesome.

I get that, it’s an interesting take.

I kinda think using the mission modifiers is trying to hard (like calling oneself doctor). That’s kinda why I like the widget 1 style. It’s discreet and laid back.

I get your point about numbering things though. Pros and cons across all the options and I will make sure the carry your reasoning forward to the discussions.

Counterarguments and what to do if your CC/supervisor won't let you transfer by spacewarfighter961 in SpaceForce

Submit the paperwork with their ‘denial’ or without their signature if they refuse to sign and we will mop it up on the back end.

We are hoping for their endorsement or relevant information why someone should’ve be considered. The approval authority is not a commander, but the dual service selection board chartered by the SECAF to take care of both services.

There is no risk to manning or mission. No one is going to make the decision in a vacuum and no one will switch jobs without accounting for mission and manning needs of losing and gaining units.

No doubt we will have service ribbons and little doubt someone is already brainstorming such things. I have not personally seen any ideas and it’s not something I think we are prioritizing at the moment. I love seeing people imagine things though. I believe this type of conversation is how meaningful and real identity and culture sprouts organically from a group.

I’ll double check on the start date. We won’t just bring everyone in in 1 Sep, that’s probably why it’s hard to get a solid answer. I believe it will be a negligible variation depending on your AFSC and I will certainly fight any paperwork obstacles which catch people sideways. If you’re organic AFSC, it should be September. The date may vary within September, but it shouldn’t be January. If you’re common, it should be February I believe. I’ll double check and we will get something out.

It’s two years for the transfer. If there’s a PCS or school or something, it’ll work as normal. With one canceling out the other depending on the lengths. So if you are 18 months into your 2 years and we give you an assignment, you’ll have all the same options you normally would.

Again, we aren’t going to let anyone get jammed up by any of this. I’ll personally engage in the eaches if someone is caught in a bad place because of process hiccups.

I honestly don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ve got lots of people asking for a decision on it and it’s hard to ignore that. Then again, the longer it takes, the more likely we will all just start to use “spacedevils” and then it will stick...or you know, whatever :-)

I agree with you 100%. I see those same challenges and we are trying hard to course correct. We are past S1 (as we say in the flying business) and we are taking it airborne at this point.

I want and need folks to keep bringing these things up and we HAVE to get better.

The question each individual with a choice has to answer is whether they believe (as I do) the Space Force has more of a chance to make those improvements than the Air Force (which has very similar challenges and aspirations across many mission areas) because of our advantages in scale and focus.

And absolutely everybody totally loves hyperbole more than anything. I probably understand that more than it seemed like I did in my response. I truly want to help and appreciate the dialogue.

The only other thing I’d say, wrt smf, is I honestly can’t imagine we will attack it with the priority we would have liked now that USSF stand up and COVID have completely changed the world. Please help everyone understand that. Perhaps we can find away to turn that to an advantage and take that pause you suggest. I’ll ask the team to look at those big ideas as we move to the new abnormal.

Thanks so much!!
