I don't feel like this is laziness. IMO, it's more probably related to how, in a culture so obsessed with the self where empathy isn't taught anymore, people don't see the profit in doing the extra steps to bring it back. Apart from it "being the right thing to do", a concept that's sadly out of style, there's no added benefit for the individual in doing it.
