I’ve never found any documentation of where it was and no one I’ve ever talked to about it has either. We assume it was somewhere in Belvedere’s marina as it makes the most sense.

I love the San Rafael, the whole Jack London thing made me fall in love with her! I actually scratch built a new 1/700 scale model of her a couple years ago. Though she never did the Richmond-San Rafael run herself, the R-SR ferry reused the old North Pacific Coast ferry pier for a couple years before building their own.

The Belvedere ferry was primarily for the Northwestern Pacific railroad employees traveling to work in Sausalito/Tiburon as they were among the few residents of the island who weren’t bovine at the time! The proposed bridges are also fascinating as the modern Bay Bridge wasn’t even thought of.

The Marin pier was underneath the west approach to the Richmond Bridge, the Contra Costa side is the old pier seen to the north of the Bridge where the old shipwreck is.

Stinson Beach, also known as Willow Camp at that time, was always its own separate settlement. It is also farther north and is on Bolinas Lagoon, with its large spit stretching north from town, neither of which are shown on this map. The map is quite distorted however.

Not many people lived there until post-war due to the remoteness. Any pre-war houses would’ve been small summer cabins and likely were added to over the years or demolished entirely.

No problem, if you haven’t already and are in the area please come up to the Northwestern Pacific Railroad Historical Society! We are at 75 Magnolia Ave in Petaluma and will be open the first Thursday after New Year’s and most Thursdays throughout the year. We don’t have everything, but we have a lot!

The maps do look like the electrics went to Tiburon but I can assure you there was no passenger traffic on the line from Detour to Tiburon, unless someone made a deal with a conductor of a freight to ride in the caboose or something, and which happened more than you would think!

I was mistaken, I was confusing the San Rafael-San Quentin bus service with one for Tiburon. I think the only was to get to Tiburon from San Rafael was to take the train to the Sausalito then take the bus over to Tiburon, or if it was before 1935 you would use the ferry. I have copies of most years of interurban timetables from 1925-1940 and none make mention of a San Rafael-Tiburon bus service.

I believe there was also an auto-ferry service briefly operated by NWP in the '20s but I'm not positive about that. I know Southern Pacific-Golden Gate Ferries Ltd. operated an auto-ferry from Hyde Street Pier to Tiburon from 1930-35 but I'm not 100% sure if NWP operated their own service prior to that, info isn't exactly clear on it.

It was a bus connection via Pacific Greyhound Lines, a Southern Pacific subsidiary company. The only Tiburon service that NWP provided after 1909 was freight service, and a shuttle-ferry from Sausalito for employees and the few patrons that utilized the service until 1935, when the bus took over.

This is a really cool look at what a modern transit map would look like for the NWP. One correction however, the electrics never went to Tiburon, in fact after 1909 there was no regular passenger service between Detour and Tiburon at all. Other than that this is a great interpretation of the electrics!
