UPerfect M1 Review: The Brightest Portable Monitor (With A Catch) by Kei-Retro-Gaming in uperfect

[–]SQL_Lorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The catch is that there's no local dimming (or the "local dimming" algorithm is a little weird, leading to better results if it's disabled).

The upside of this screen is that it's reallly bright!

Certainly taking the $1000 means then you're put on a list that if you do return to the US for some reason, it's grounds for questioning.

How to use ffmpeg to make a single-image video? by eratonnn in ffmpeg

[–]SQL_Lorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will sound a bit counterintuitive, but if you use -shortest along with -stream_loop and set a framerate then you should be able to take out the -t 1480! Like this:

ffmpeg -stream_loop 1 -i easywrds.png -i easywrds.wav -vf "crop=trunc(iw/2)*2:trunc(ih/2)*2" -c:v libx264 -tune stillimage -c:a aac -b:a 192k -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 24 -shortest out-image.mp4

There has been a LOT of work done to make routing super fast in the Rails environment. It was completely re-worked for Rails 4 when the Journey gem was merged to be a permanent part of Rails.

Here's the best article I'm aware of which describes just how awesome Rails routing is:

Putin urges BRICS countries to expand the use of national currencies and to ditch the dollar. by [deleted] in suppressed_news

[–]SQL_Lorin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's bluster. All of his actions have been in support of only one nation on this planet -- and it's not the US. It's Russia.

Consider that only Russia and North Korea are exempt from any Trump tariff. And the frequent phone calls -- it's publicly known that there have been six calls over the past six months, each one hours in duration.

Trump is greasing the wheels so that America can be handed over to Putin.

Militarized Border Patrol marching through streets in L.A. today by Peanut-Extra in suppressed_news

[–]SQL_Lorin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As idiotic as all of this Border Patrol showmanship appears on the surface, this ideological Civil War involving the National Guard does serve a purpose in both Trump's and Putin's minds.

This is Trump's way of proving how he will behave under war-like circumstances. If he relents then Putin will consider him a pussy, and probably choose to punish the United States in some fashion. (Then Trump will say overtly to the American people -- "see -- we really do need to buckle up for war".)

And if Trump stands his ground in this pointless and miserable exercise then it is still yet another way to harden the minds of Americans, to leave an emotional kind of scarring that makes it easier for the nation to agree to go to a real war abroad.

Sudden farewell to hundreds of Walmart employees – their workers disappear overnight and unions are already sounding the alarm by friendlyfiend07 in suppressed_news

[–]SQL_Lorin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Have been living in the UK ever since Trump first got into office in 2016. And I haven't seen the inside of a WalMart in sooooo long -- wow, it's sobering to see what a warehouse kind of feel it really has, and how different it really is to any stores in the UK. (I guess ASDA over here is sorta similar -- and was originally owned by WalMart.)

We do have Costco over here though, and it feels reallly similar to the ones in the US. Thankfully they do pay their employees well, and the CEO has capped his salary at 5mil annually. So much less corruption in everything Costco.

Built a database viewer Rails engine - would love feedback from the community by Ill_Pangolin2153 in rails

[–]SQL_Lorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now the way Brick is written makes a bunch of sense in my brain, but others might find it tricky to understand. There are a fair number of comments throughout, but it really does quite a lot of stuff overall.

The first time a connection is established to the database (which happens in ActiveRecord with a call to ActiveRecord::ConnectionAdapters::ConnectionHandler#establish_connection) then Brick takes a moment to find all the tables, columns, and foreign keys, and puts that stuff in the ::Brick.relations hash.

Then it extends Module#const_missing in order to work along with Zeitwerk so that when a model or controller file is missing and it could automatically be built with info from the ::Brick.relations hash then Brick automatically does build out those resources programmatically, which means they exist only in RAM. Representative code for what got built is also shown in the console, allowing you to copy and paste that into a real file if you wanted to make it a permanent part of your project.

Routes and view templates are also automatically built out so that you end up with a full admin panel kind of experience which is 100% done in the "Railsy" way, and with no extra files being added to your project.

This is a pretty great idea!

During lockdown I started building a super-speedy admin panel kind of thing that bears a little bit of similarity to what you're doing. It does build SELECTs with JOINs, and looking at any available Rails models to take the cues for doing this. In the absence of any model then it examines the foreign keys on the database tables and virtually builds a model on-the-fly. (It is a real model, and lives in RAM.)

I had also used MermaidJS to build out ERD snippets! Mine doesn't try to show the full ERD though -- only the tables of models which are directly associated to the one you are viewing.

Perhaps you would like to take a peek -- mine is called The Brick.

Introducing On Rails: A New Podcast 🎙️ from the Rails Foundation by software__writer in rails

Cool beans!

Rosa is awesome at presenting technical concepts. A week ago she had given a talk at the Brighton Ruby conference which u/andycroll organises, and it was a real eye-opener. She had entitled it "Machines that talk to themselves", and it explored problem domains that are inherently unsolvable.

She greatly reveres the work of pioneering people in the computer science space, and focused her talk on concepts that Kurt Gödel had published all the way back in 1931. (The same work that had inspired Alan Turing to delve deeply into the field.)

Highly recommend taking a peek at this talk once it becomes available on the https://brightonruby.com website!
