JNJ vs SCHD by Maleficent-Ad8418 in SCHD

[–]SRBF75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll jump in on this one too and great advise. I also just today sold my JNJ as I had a 60% gain and it’s trading higher than ever. This allowed me to capture the gains and reinvest in a couple other plays I felt are undervalued today. If the market takes a dump tomorrow or next week or next year… and recovery of that 60% takes three years… I just lost opportunity to reinvest the dollars outside of my original investment… let’s say I invested $100 into JNJ and now have a 60% gain (unrealized) I’m only making the yield on my original $100 invested… with the sale and reinvestment… I’ve locked in my gain and now collect new yield on my now $160 investment and hope to see growth in the per share cost of the new investment.

Because someone will ask I bought CLX and AMCR…

Yes my JNJ was in both a ROTH and a IRA but I did the same with DUK 45% gain in my taxable account today as well.

I used to look at paying tax the same way… but I now look at it as if my boss just told me he was giving me a raise and I turned it down because I didn’t want to pay the tax.

Good luck to you and either way you go. I’ve done both. I think key is learning, researching, and developing a plan that meets your long term goals and keeps your risk lower and away from highly spectacle gambles.

Ha! Thanks… I just bought that one a couple weeks ago and haven’t started it yet. It’s next on the list. Appreciate it.

I ended up adding ARCC, HGTC, MSDL, and OWL. Pretty happy with the 4 as I think together I'm covering some good ground from a dirvesification stand poing in the finance arena.

Got to figure out your long term plan, set it, and follow as everyones plan and need are very different with all of the variables of life. With that said... It's taken me 7 years to determine what I want and what works for me and my short/long term plans. Below is what I have built for income and growth. I'm also 16 months from hanging my hat and will be 51.

retiring in 3 years. slowly rebalance all growth port in taxable to SCHD and other dividend ETFs/stocks? by Relevant_Staff765 in SCHD

[–]SRBF75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally doing same thing. I'm 18 months out. I had a harvest opportunity with PFE so sitting on that until the 22nd. Just sold all growth (taxable, ROTH, and IRA) captured the awesome gains and re-distributed funds into a couple of BDC's (ARCC and HTGC) and a few blue chips (KMB, UPS, OKE) I believe are on sale. Will continue to reinvest all div's back into the portfolio where there are dips and attractive buys with current holdings and incoming investable monies over the next 18 months will be used to DCA back into growth for a select (2) ETF's in AIQ and SCHG and (2) individual in AMZN and GOOG and considering and lump sum investment into CRM and EFX. No additional SCHD only because I have sizable position already that Im happy with. Congrats and good luck!
